iTunes Review

Solidifying the mainstream breakthrough of Document, Green found R.E.M. in some of its most playful and solemn moments. Its first album under a new contract with Warner Bros., the album provided a stack of direct, rousing anthems ("Get Up," "Pop Song 89") that gave the band its biggest single to date in the gently childlike "Stand." "Turn You Inside Out" questioned the gamesmanship of both romance and major-league rock. Other musical shadings marked one of R.E.M.'s most touching songs yet, the acoustic "You Are the Everything," while "World Leader Pretend" and "I Remember California" were the products of a deep moodiness. More consistent albums would follow, but Green's best stuff retains its freshness nearly 20 years on.

An album I can't live without.

Everyone needs a copy of this album. It's so amazing. R.E.M.'s best work, hands down.

Loved the R/4 imagery in the album art on this release

I've been updating my R.E.M. -- getting everything on iTunes, but it's just not the same because the art doesn't come with it. I've scanned the other reviews for this album as well as those for "Document" and unless I missed it, nobody has brought up the clever numbers puzzles these guys did with their album art. "Document" was all about 5, and the "Green" release was all about the number 4. Doesn't anyone remember how your could turn the album (or in my case, cassette) art in the light, and the number 4 could be seen in the surface of the paper on the Rs? GREEN=G4EEN Also, the songs were numbered 1, 2, 3, R..."R" was "Stand" on this album. Oh, how we used to talk about that and what it meant. R.E.M. was so great back then. "Orange Crush" got all the airplay, but "Turn You Inside-Out" is a much better track. This album simply doesn't hold the same place in my heart as Pageant and Murmur, but it's still waaaay better than any of the garbage getting airplay today.

A treasure trove

I had forgotten how Michael Stipe's strong vocals are so convincingly full of emotion in Hairshirt and Untitled. If these songs don't tug at your heart, Speaking of strong vocals, Turn You Inside Out are one of Michael Stipe's best performances. The Wrong Child might be more effective. It is in their first bare tracks featuring the mandolin such as Hairshirt and You are the Everything that "time stands still" and I travel back to listening to this album when I was a tiny, tiny kid. I give the album four stars because I can't say that I've ever been a fan of Pop Song '89. Oddly enough, the equally catchy and sweet Get Up ranks among one of my favorite songs.

Biography

Formed: 1980 in Athens, GA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
