iTunes Review

Solidifying the mainstream breakthrough of Document, Green found R.E.M. in some of its most playful and solemn moments. Its first album under a new contract with Warner Bros., the album provided a stack of direct, rousing anthems ("Get Up," "Pop Song 89") that gave the band its biggest single to date in the gently childlike "Stand." "Turn You Inside Out" questioned the gamesmanship of both romance and major-league rock. Other musical shadings marked one of R.E.M.'s most touching songs yet, the acoustic "You Are the Everything," while "World Leader Pretend" and "I Remember California" were the products of a deep moodiness. More consistent albums would follow, but Green's best stuff retains its freshness nearly 20 years on.

R.E.M.'s major label debut makes no major changes from it's predecessor

I don't understand why some R.E.M. fans believe the band "sold out" on this album just because this was their first album after they left IRS and went to Warner Bros. Green is very similar to the previous album, Document, in both music and album structure, it is basically just a continuation of the kind of music the band made on Document. Sure there's a couple of "pop songs",most notably "Stand", but they aren't that bad and they certainly don't make the album bad. In fact, some of R.E.M.'s finest work can be found on this album. "Pop Song 89" is a cynical send-up to the Doors, and is very similar to that band's "Hello, I Love You". "Get Up" is a song about bassist Mike Mills, who apparently slept in too late to get to the studio. "You Are the Everything", "The Wrong Child", and "Hairshirt" are decent little mandolin-led tracks. "Stand" is, to quote guitarist Peter Buck, "the stupidest song we've ever written". I think that is a bit of an overstatement, it's catchy and has a cool guitar solo. "World Leader Pretend" is by far the best song on the album, a politically-charged track that lets the listener deep inside the mind of a "world leader". I feel that if there is one song that could sum up the George W. Bush years, this is it, even though it was released 20 years ago. "Orange Crush" and "Turn You-Inside Out" are hard rockers, and two of the best rock songs the band's ever done. The former was even featured in the video game Rock Band. "I Remember California" sounds eerily similar to Document's "Oddfellows Local 151", and gives me chills every time I listen to it. "Untitled" is a fitting closing track. An intresting fact to note about that song is that it is literally untitled. On the CD, the eleventh track was simply blank. All in all, Green can be seen as an album that sums up all parts of R.E.M.'s career, closing the door on one end, and opening the door on another.

Hands down, one of their best albums. The classics on this album are Stand and the popular Orange Crush. My favorites though are Turn You Inside-Out, You Are the Everything, Pop Song 89 and Get Up, but Orange Crush is definitly in there as well. I'd say even if your not a fan that you should try this albums music and download a couple of songs cause this is their true Rock album!!!!!! I loved this album the first time I heard the Music.

R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought...
