iTunes Review
In response to a Bush administration that appeared intent on destroying everything he held dear, Neil Young released Greendale, a complex garage-rock opera that aired his views on environmentalism, media monopolies, and a nation in moral decline. The title refers to a fictional California town inhabited by a cast of characters Young has dubbed the Green family. The songs on Greendale trace dialogues between the generational factions of this individualistic family, as they struggle to maintain their ideals in a world that Young portrays as soulless and borderline fascistic. If you are looking for listenability, “Falling from Above” and “Bandit” are your best bets. For its complex web of details, the album best communicates a broad sense of resignation and nostalgia for a simpler time. Young’s own belief in the power of environmental protest is earnestly stated in “Be the Rain," but what sticks with you is the closing stanza of “Leave the Drivin’,” surely one of the most cynical verses of Young’s career: “The moral of this story / Is try not to get too old / The more time you spend on earth / The more you see unfold.”
Customer Reviews
The Modern, Prudent Consumer
With all the controversy and mixed opinions of "Greendale", it's hard not to listen to that preview below this review without already having partially judged the album. You being the modern, prudent consumer will read the reviews and take them into consideration, but not allow them to overwhelm your own opinion. "Greendale" is a story of life, inhabited with characters. Being a concept album, many of the tracks don't work on their own (until you've listened to the entire record.) But just like life itself, most things don't work on their own. It is the sense of connection--between people, places, songs on an album, and experiences. Try it out. At worst you lose 10 bucks; not that bad in the overall scheme of things. At best, you'll be in possession of an album which actually has the power to evoke contemplation and reflection, joy and sorrow. Oh yea, the music ain't too shabby neither.
greendale
greendale outright satisfies. The story did make more sense to me after watching the dvd, and this has definitely enhanced my pleasure in many repeated listenings. I like waiting till I know I have time to hear the thing all the way through; like a good book it's hard to put down, and deserves start-to-finish attention. Great riffs, jamming distorted fuzzy blues, wailing vocals, dark witty self-deprecating humor - a great listen. A dangerous car stereo selection: so hypnotic it will make you forget you are driving.
A MASTERPIECE
I've listened to Greendale many times, I find the words and story very engaging; the music brilliant Neil Young and Crazy Horse. I am never dissappointed. Even without watching the DVD, I thought, he's gone and made the best miniseries ever; on a CD! I'm entertained every time I put it on.
