Superb!
David Mahler is the 2004 national champion, and this album confirms why. It is magnificently breathtaking.
Greenwood is a fantastic album showing the versatility of the hammered dulcimer in inventive fashions. David not only proves himself as a premiere dulcimist, but also a passionate songwriter. David’s training as a percussionist is clearly evident, and his playing is polished with precision and is enhanced with nifty timing techniques.
The album starts with Billowing, a track that features David playing with four hammers and two drums with his feet at the same time! Not only is this fantastic show value, but he plays it in a way that is musical and makes sense. Bravo!
All of the tracks are superb, but additional highlights to my ears are Greenwood, Waltz for a Rainy Day, and my personal favorite… Tripping Feet. Tripping Feet is a passionate duet with cello and communicates a haunting, inspirational message.
I’m looking forward to more works from David Mahler.
