iTunes Review
Nick Cave has always had a wild side. The Birthday Party once provided him with plenty of electrical cover and the Bad Seeds occasionally broke out in fits of mania. As Grinderman, Cave’s Bad Seeds extend those fits and turn them into one massive wail. These are blues songs turned angrier, punk songs turned edgier, and folk songs gone awry. This is rock ‘n’ roll at its most extreme. The thick guitars and bouzouki on “Heathen Child” take the tribal beat and rampage through the jungle. “When My Baby Comes” shuffles in a disturbed jumble with Cave repeating his lines obsessively as the drone grows more intense and the backing shrieks take over. “What I Know” is the meditative breather before the deluge. “Evil!” crushes everything in its path with Cave as the sturdy and demanding commander. “Kitchenette” digs deeper into the Delta blues. “Palaces of Montezuma” comes as a soothing surprise. Cave glides over the rain-slicked road with a chorus that’s the nearest he’s come to pop in many full moons. “Bellringer Blues” adds wicked gravity to Cave’s desperate treadmill. The Deluxe Edition includes the bonus cut “Fire Boy” and remixes of the album’s single.

The Allegory of A Certain Cave
Ranging from 2008's excellent Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds album, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! To this years Grinderman II, monikers are nearly just an exercise in restraint these days for the ever-morbid Nick Cave. However, you can challenge yourself to endless amounts of labyrinthine compare and contrast models between The Bad Seeds, Grinderman, and, hey, Birthday Party. Forego the superfluity of such frivolity. Grinderman II is the pinnacle of the Grinderman aesthetic, indulging in feral desires.
These graveyard blues that Nick Cave so effortlessly manufactures are simply wondrous in their ability to both instill humor as well as infinite morbidities. Mickey Mouse and The Goodbye Man is a measured, in Cave terms, romp of punk that oscillates between warped guitar riffs and Caves love of quavering, theatric vocals. A majority of the record he lewdly refers to himself as Daddy, assuming a paternal role that includes both fabled wolf-men and countless she-devils.
However, despite the midnight imagery, it all lends to one thing: an indulgence and will to toss aside rationale. Sure, Cave and company still do the ephemeral pop-song with both beauty and ease on Palaces of Montezuma. Yet, his band has struck upon an ethos of audacious post-punk heights. Both giddily hilarious (Kitchenette) and endlessly dark, erhm evil!, (Evil), Grinderman II is one of the greatest aural thrill rides of the year. Just don't invite your parents.
