Done with the corporate drama at Interscope, G-Unit lieutenant Tony Yayo is back on his independent grind with Gunpowder Guru, a straight-to-Internet mixtape that conspicuously avoids any attempts at crossover R&B jams, instead fully embracing the dark side of Southside Queens. Sluggish, macabre production comes mostly from Doe Pesci, who provides plenty of sparse drums and minor-key keyboard action, setting the tone for ten songs exclusively about flagrant homicide, the crack game, and life behind bars. Yayo's never been the most charismatic MC, and the subject matter can get redundant to say the least, but there is something to be said for real griminess, and his graphic storytelling sounds truly authentic. Check out "Bullets Whistle," "King of the Pyrex," and "Top-notch Gangsta."
