Album Review

Gutter Ballet marked the transition between Savatage's earlier straight-forward, fantasy-themed metal and the more progressive direction the band took in the 1990s. Co-writing all their new material with producer Paul O' Neill, the songwriting on Gutter Ballet is leaps and bounds ahead of almost anything the group had recorded before. The arrangements are more complex, while O' Neill's production and the addition of Chris Caffery as a second guitarist added new depth to the band's sound. On "Gutter Ballet" and "When the Crowds Are Gone," the addition of piano accentuates the songs' mournful sound. Both these pieces and "Summer's Rain" are light years away from Sirens or Dungeons Are Calling, featuring slower tempos, soaring guitars, and sophisticated, sensitive lyrics delivered touchingly by Jon Oliva. Criss Oliva's guitar playing improved, as well, and his beautiful acoustic instrumental, "Silk and Steel," is a highlight on the album. Despite the change in focus, the band did not give up their edge, but several of the rockers show a newfound maturity in subject matter. "Rage and War," "Mentally Yours," and "Thorzine Shuffle" all tackle serious topics with tight, dynamic playing. While there is some material here that is a throwback to earlier days — "She's in Love" is a sexually charged rocker while "The Unholy" and "Hounds" feature dark fantasy lyrics — thanks to interesting tempo changes and more complex production, the tracks sound more epic in scope than most of the group's previous work.

UNDER THE RADAR

Some of the best music i have heard is music that is not well known . I think that is actually a good thing. I am sick of Nickelback and Nickelback clones. I have had this cd since it came out and i still love it. You should really check it out if you havent heard it. Very original sound. Favorite tracks include Of Rage and War, the title track, Shes in Love, & Mentally Yours. Seriously worth checking out.

Gutter Ballet

This is one of the greatest albums ever. Gutter Ballet is an incredible piece of music. Anyone who likes rock has to own a copy.

A defining change of direction

This album is a conundrum for me. Being an early Savatage purist, I find Gutter Ballet is at once a complete change of direction into a decidedly more progressive (and in my opinion overly theatrical) sound, yet still one of my favorites in the band’s 25-year catalog.

Savatage’s first five albums, minus the more pop-driven Fight for the Rock, to me define that classic Savatage sound that the band has almost completely abandoned in the 21st century. This album is the first stepping stone on the way down that path.

I remember purchasing Gutter Ballet on cassette in 1989, popping it into my Walkman (R.I.P.) and walking around my local shopping mall with the familiar yet fresh sound of Savatage echoing in my head as the opening track, “Of Rage and War,” played. Sounded like a solid, classic Savatage tune, not too far at all removed from 1987’s Hall of the Mountain King.

It was the title track that woke me up to the fact that this band had matured immensely. So dynamic, so powerful and melodic; heavy on the piano. Too bad it would eventually morph into the melodramatic and self-important monstrosity known as Trans-Siberian Orchestra. As it stands on this album, though, the virgin outing of this new sound is incredible and highly recommended. For TSO fans and Savatage fans alike.

Savatage formed in Florida in 1978 as Avatar, led by brothers Jon (vocals) and Criss (guitar) Oliva. They changed their name to Savatage in 1983, pursuing a strongly Judas Priest- and Iron Maiden-influenced style of metal. Their other members included Steve "Doc" Wacholz (drums) and Keith Collins (bass), who was later replaced by Johnny Lee Middleton. They meandered between basic metal and more commercial fare before adding second guitarist Chris Caffery and hitting their stride in 1990 with Gutter...
