Album Review

Radiohead's admittedly assumed dilemma: how to push things forward using just the right amounts of the old and the older in order to please both sides of the divide? Taking advantage of their longest running time to date, enough space is provided to quench the thirsts of resolute Bends devotees without losing the adventurous drive or experimentation that eventually got the group into hot water with many of those same listeners. Guitars churn and chime and sound like guitars more often than not; drums are more likely to be played by a human; and discernible verses are more frequently trailed by discernible choruses. So, whether or not the group is to be considered "back," there is a certain return to relatively traditional songcraft. Had the opening "2 + 2 = 5" and "Sit Down. Stand Up." been made two years before, each song's slowly swelling intensity would have plateaued a couple minutes in, functioning as mood pieces without any release; instead, each boils over into its own cathartic tantrum. The spook-filled "Sail to the Moon," one of several songs featuring prominent piano, rivals "Street Spirit" and hovers compellingly without much sense of force carrying it along. Somewhat ironically, minus a handful of the more conventionally structured songs, the album would be almost as fractured, remote, and challenging as Amnesiac. "Backdrifts" and "The Gloaming" feature nervous electronic backdrops, while the emaciated "We Suck Young Blood" is a laggard processional that, save for one outburst, shuffles along uneasily. At nearly an hour in length, this album doesn't unleash the terse blow delivered by its two predecessors. However, despite the fact that it seems more like a bunch of songs on a disc rather than a singular body, its impact is substantial. Regardless of all the debates surrounding the group, Radiohead have entered a second decade of record-making with a surplus of momentum. [Compared to the all-live Kid A extra disc and the grab-bag of Amnesiac bonus material, the addendum on EMI's 2009 expanded reissue of Hail to the Thief is a more conventional collection of B-sides and rarities. Of course, this is partially down to the source material: Radiohead released three singles from Hail to the Thief, which is more than either of its predecessors, so there were more stray tracks to round up. Many of these were either instrumentals or remixes, with the notable exception of the tense, tightly wound "Paperbag Writer," the moody acoustic "Gagging Order," and the slow, blues-tinged crawl of "I Am a Wicked Child," three cuts that stand out against the murky atmosphere that surrounds them, atmosphere that intrigues but doesn't quite tantalize. The rest of the disc is rounded out by live performances.] ~ Andy Kellman & Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

first!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

such a great album and no reviews? Shame....

Amazing album

Let me start by saying that this is a very underated album and also my favorite next to kid a. This is an album that has a good mix between radioheads expererimental/eleectronic side and there normal radiohead sound. The soundscapes they made for this album are beautiful and are best when listening in your headphones. The album itself is dark in a way compared to other albums. My favorite track has to be The Gloaming.

Revisiting an old place in your mind

This is a beautifully crafted album, slow paced and energy driven. On a Friday doing it again, I can still remember the concert at the Hollywood Bowl- simply Amazing!

Biography

Formed: 1989 in Oxford, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Radiohead were one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's three-guitar attack, which relied on texture — borrowing as much from My Bloody Valentine and Pink Floyd as R.E.M. and Pixies — instead of virtuosity....
