Album Review

At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and Winter Songs' pastoral cover art — which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest — screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" — it probably helps that most traditional Christmas hymns tend to fall into the same brooding minor keys that serve as the foundation for most, if not all, heavy metal songs. While Winter Songs, like Twisted Sister's excellent 2006 Twisted Christmas collection, may not be mainstream enough for the department store Santa kiosk, it's a surprisingly cohesive and listenable addition to the genre — and if skillfully disguised in a Mannheim Steamroller jewel case, it could make Christmas morning truly joyful.

This is a solid album

This is some good work from Rob Halford. At least he should get credit for a solid effort. I saw the Priest four times in the 80's. From Beyond the Realms of Death to Nailed to the Gun have to admit I had my doubts - but this is good for a rock holiday album. Maybe he had a spiritual awakening of sorts. Who knows?....but I like this

Brilliant

I think it's cool and a great idea. I hope the Lord uses this in his life and he becomes a changed man!

Real fans will like this.

This is a great album....some traditional and looks like some new stuff he wrote too which is cool. No it's not the heaviest of metal it gets as close as you can get and still be a Christmas album. You can be into metal and into Christmas too, just like the Metal God...he loves Christmas, he's said so, go online find some interviews if you don't believe me. Anyway, about the next hardest Christmas music you can get is Bruce Springsteen (!), so this is a very welcome addition in my collection.

As the incomparable voice of thrashing beast Judas Priest, Rob Halford defined the role of the metal frontman. After his unamiable departure from the British juggernaut, Halford formed Fight with Priest drummer-come-lately Scott Travis. Fight released three powerful records, Halford straining to remain the masthead of the heavy rock movement he created. Two, a trendy electro-exercise with Trent Reznor, took two steps back on the misguided Voyeurs. Halford returned to his roots and formed a new unit,...
