Album Review

This five-song EP is only an introduction to the dark electronica-pop of Splashdown. This Boston trio suggests a Morcheeba with angst. A full-length is due out next year on the Java imprint. This is the specialty Capitol label run by Glen Ballard and Gary Gersh, partly responsible for the success of Alanis Morissette and Nirvana, respectively. Foremost in the Splashdown sound is the contrast of the alluring, sweet voice of Kasson Crooker with the shrieking, siren vocals of Melissa Kaplan (Women of Sodom). As a result, a piece that starts as warm seduction flares into a piercing attack. Comfortably undulating, the electronic rock mixes with dual and multi-tracked female vocals alongside distorted rock guitar or acoustic melodies for a ride that is as seductive as it is varied.

Another Great Album from Splashdown!

Okay, so first things first, the album is short, but the price is low so it makes up for it. Sonically, this is a great jewel from Splashdown that I personally have been waiting for since I saw that their first album was on i-Tunes. I had heard a few of this one's songs back in college and the rest of the album is just as great. The vocalizations draw you into a web of audiological bliss. "Sugar High" is so smooth but still sassy. "50%" is another of my favorites, drawing on the rebellous thoughts of a woman tired of the domestic fights she has so patiently put up with for far too long. "Beguiled Mark II" is a remix of the original that peps it up a bit. The emotion in the vocals are enhanced by the moody music; it is nearly impossibly not to fall into each song. Seriously, if you have read this far and have not picked up this album you are denying yourself a musical treat, true candy for your ears.

Buy this album

Wow... I spent a lot more on this album than the iTunes price, and back then it didn't come with 50% or Asia At Odd Hours - which, by the way, are two of my favorite Splashdown songs lyrically. Melissa Kaplan writes the most amazing lyrics, and you get some real gems in this album. Start with Ironspy and Halfworld; when you're convinced of how great Splashdown is, come back for the rest.
