A Supreb Prequel to a Beloved Franchise

"Halo Wars" composer Stephen Rippy (of Age of Empires/Age of Mythology fame) does a magnificent job of not only incorporating Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori's material, but laying a believable musical foundation for those scores (as this is set 20 years before "Halo: Combat Evolved"). Thematically, Rippy introduces us to "Spirit of Fire", a tragic orchestral and choral piece which both bears his trademark style and hints at the classic chant theme that we remember from the vicious battles on Installation 04. "Bad Here Day" begins with ambient electronics before being joined by a female choir singing a variation of the "Halo" theme, before being joined by an epic accompaniement of strings. "Just ad Nauseum" has a heavy electric guitar in the style of "Halo 2", with some snippets and reworkings of O'Donnell/Salvatori. "Freaked Out" begins with a re-arrangement of "Spirit of Fire" before merging into some signature Rippy action music. "Through Your Hoops" begins with some heavy brass, cello, and perccussion work before building in a powerful new theme on piano and violins by Rippy, which then merges into the famous "Halo" battle theme we know so well. "Under Your Hurdles" (composed by Kevin McMullan, Rippy's longtime collaborator) is short, but features a spectacular performance of the "Halo" chant theme on a duduk before slowly fading into electronic ambience. "Insignificantia (All Sloppy/No Joe)" meanwhile is a bittersweet finale, introducing a new melody before finishing on a quiet statement of "Spirit of Fire", reminding us not only of the departure of our new crew, but of the excellent studio behind them that has now been closed. Buy this. Personally, I bought the CD since it came with 9 bonus tracks and videos of the recording sessions, but buy it any way you can. Not only does it pay tribute to the scores that many of us love, but brings plenty of spectacular new themes and style along with it for a truly Great Journey. Congratulations Mr. Rippy! PS: And to the person who said it's a "discrase" (his misspelling, not mine): Marty O'Donnell gave Rippy the thumbs-up on the material. If he thinks it's good, then I think you should re-think your case that only the previous "Halo" scores are worth listening.

A true masterpiece

This is one of the best Soundtracks Ensemble Studios had done. If you appreciate the music from Age Of Empires saga, then this is your chance to complete your collection. It mixes perfectly the music from Halo and from AOE. Highly recommendable.

Purely Magnificent

I recently bought this soundtrack and I personally think it meets all of Martin O' Donald's magnificent work. Some songs, even, exceed it. This is NOT a waste of money and you should definately buy this if you are a previous Halo music fan.
