Album Review

It is true that Matt Johnson offers some startingly original interpretations of Hank Williams songs on Hanky Panky — he makes them sound like The The songs. That doesn't necessarily mean he's tapped into the essence of Williams' music, it means that he is a gifted arranger. Most of the song pulse to an electronic beat and the atmophere is thick with forboding doom. Strangely enough, it works better than several The The records, since Hank Williams is a better songwriter than Matt Johnson.

solid effort

This is a solid album that hopefully introduces both songwriter/vocalists to newer, younger audiences. If you would like to hear more from Matt Johnson and thethe try Soulmining, Infected. I saw him perform in Toronto in the 80's and LA in the 90's and have to say I was blown away both times by what raw talent this artist has. I've been a fan since Soulmining..

His later years are the best. Great vocals. This albulm is a sleeper. Underappreciated. He is truly a non conformist.
