Album Review

One of the most appealing Disney pop confections in some time, the Hannah Montana soundtrack features the show's star Miley Cyrus singing cute, well-written songs that nod to teen-pop, rock and country. Tracks like "Just Like You" borrow every gimmick that producers like the Matrix have perfected in the early 2000s: acoustic guitars that give way to big, crunchy electric ones, shiny synths and backing vocals that sound like they were sung into a megaphone. However, Hannah Montana has some sharper-than-average songwriting going for it, especially on "If We Were a Movie"'s clever, catchy chorus: "If we were a movie"/You'd be the right guy/And I'd be the best friend that you'd fall in love with in the end." Songs like "The Best of Both Worlds" allude to Hannah Montana's double life as a pop star and a regular girl transported from Nashville to Malibu ("This is the Life"'s soaring country-pop sounds decidedly more like the former city than the latter), and the themes of having fun, being yourself and following your dreams wind throughout the album, especially on the spunky, new-wavey girl power anthem "I Got Nerve." Fittingly, though, Cyrus is the star of Hannah Montana. Her voice is surprisingly rich for a girl in her early teens, and she has more personality than many pop starlets her age, especially those in the Disney stable. Aside from the slight stumble of "Pumpin' Up the Party" — a groove that ends up going nowhere — the album does a great job of showcasing her charismatic vocals with strong melodies. Cyrus also performs a track as herself, "I Learned From You," a duet with her dad, Billy Ray, that has an earnest vibe that's more Vanessa Carlton than Hannah Montana. The soundtrack is rounded out with a few like-minded songs, such as Everlife's "Find Yourself in You" (which seems to be the template for Hannah's rock-edged pop) and the sparkly power pop of the Click Five's "Pop Princess." Hannah Montana is a sweet, starry-eyed, utterly charming soundtrack.

I'm 25 years old and I love Hannah Montana....

I know this seems sad, but when my baby sister (age 7) comes over on the weekends we spend the majority of the time watching Miley on TV. While, at first, I mocked it like any other kids show, especially when I saw it was Billy Ray Cyrus "playing" the dad whose career I followed as a little girl living in Georgia (HE WAS HUGE!). I soon found myself at Target last week ripping apart the shelves for this Album, not because Emma wanted it...because I had been singing the songs stuck in my head for 3 weeks and was dancing around the living room with out the aid of my 7 year old side kick. We spend our weekends belting out tunes like "This is the Life" on my guitar and dancing around our living room singing our brains out. This kid has talent that both generations can enjoy and it has been a long time since an artist could actually do that. The only thing I am disappointed about is the presence of other artists not involved in the show on the cd.... we don't want B5.... WE WANT MILEY!!!!! She could have easily filled an entire 12 disk album with her talent. Emma and I want to know: When is the tour coming to Boston, because we will be the first in line getting tickets! Yay! Finally!

I adore Hannah Montana! I am so glad this finally came out. Miley has a very good voice (but she could work on her live singing). I love "If we were a movie"! The lyrics are so adorable. All of the Hannah Montana/Miley songs are awesome! I don't really like The click Five, Jesse McCarney, Everlife of B5 though. Here's what I think of just the hannah montana songs on here: Best of Both Worlds: 9/10. Awesome song and the perfect theme song for Hannah Montana Who Said: 9/10. Adorable lyrics, great sound Just like you: 9/10. Loving the lyrics here Pumpin' Up the party: 7/10. My least favorite. Still an ok song If we were a movie: 10/10. Too adorable. I can't help but sing along I got nerve: 10/10. Greeatttt song. Kind of reminds me of some Avril Lavgine stuff. The Other side of me: 8/10. Ehh...its ok. i hate how it keeps repeating. This is the life: 9/10. Lovee it. So awesome. I learned from you: 8/10. Sweet song, but not one of my very favorites.
