Shymalan + Howard = Magic

For the sixth score for M. Night Shyamalan James Newton Howard brings us a dark theme that sends chills down your spine after listening to the "main titles" track alone. Since the movie does not come out for almost two weeks it is hard to tell how it will play with the actual film, but it does give a good idea of the tone of the film. Maya Beiser adds so much to the score with the cello as Hillary Hans did with The Village score.Princeton is a very emotional song that is both beautiful and haunting, but we will have to see the movie to find out. James Newton Howard has once again generated a score that is sure to please not only James Newton Howard fans but fans of film scores as well. The emotion is definately in the score and Howard and Shymalan have officially put their names next to other great collaborators such as Spielberg/ Williams and Hitchcock/ Herman. Not my favorite out of the Shymalan/ Howard collection but definately one to listen to for a while.

James Newton Howard IS One of Current Cinema's Greatest Composers

No matter how great (The Sixth Sense, Signs), bad (Lady in the Water) or mediocre (The Village) Shyamalan's movies may be, James Newton Howard and his music always win in the end. Following in the footsteps of fellow underappreciated composers Michael Giaccino and Dario Marianelli, JNH is dilligently cementing himself as one of the premier composers in Hollywood, with several Oscar nominations and box office hits under his belt as proof. Now he is building further anticipation for The Happening with the release of this album. Even by listening to the samples, you know JNH has continued his winning streak. From the haunting Main Titles to the great End Title Suite, every track is incredibly well composed. While I won't call it innovative (which, for the record, is a very hard thing to do), it has such a distinct style in its sound and flow that only JNH can provide. Any of JNH's scores from a Shyamalan film are excellent purchases and this is no exception. Now all we need to know is if the movie is actually good...

Maybe good for the movie, but NOT to own

Normally, I would purchase any soundtrack by James Newton Howard without hesitation. This time, it was an unfortunate mistake. I love most compositions created by JNH, and I'm sure this music fits the movie well, but this is not music you should listen to on its own. It's clearly designed for specific scenes and is more background music than classical scoring.
