Letdown.

Let me say that I am a huge Potter music fan. I have every soundtrack, and have collected them since 2001. John Williams made Hedwig's Theme a pop culture hit. Everybody knows it as the theme to Harry Potter. After Williams left we got a solid score by Patrick Doyle, and then a really solid two scores from Nicolas Hooper (in my opinion) My question is why change? Hooper delivered my second favorite score with Half Blood Prince, and third favorite with Order of the Phoenix. There were rumors that John Williams would come back for The Deathly Hallows but he chose not to. I really though Hooper would get the final two Hallows films and I was okay with that. Instead we get Alexandre Desplat, who is no slouch. Sadly, his score does not deliver (in my opinion) Why? Probably due to a severe lack of familiarity. The score seems very disconnected from the franchise. I swear I read an interview with him where he stated that he would incorporate more of Hedwig's Theme into the final films. There is a small trace and that is it. The whole Deathly Hallows theme throughout the soundtrack feels very moody and boring. I know that the book is very dark. So was Half Blood Prince, but Hooper managed to bring great mixes of foreboding and fun. I know that The Deathly Hallows changes the game in the books. It is unlike any of the other books, and maybe that is what Desplat is shooting for. I feel that it misses the mark and leaves Potter fans wanting some sort of recognizable material to be a bit nostalgic with while we move forward with the story and new music. Maybe it will be a great score once I see it with the film. I don't know. Right now though...I am terribly letdown. Again, this is just my opinion, and I really hope that I end up growing to like it after I see the film.

My favorite Potter scores to date:
1-Prisoner of Azkaban.
2-Half Blood Prince.
3-Order of the Phoenix
4-Goblet of Fire
5-Sorcerers Stone
6-Chamber of Secrets
7-Deathly Hallows Pt. 1

Listen before you judge..

I'm a huge fan of Desplat but even I was dissapointed after being teased that John Williams was said to return to compose for the last two movies and then wasn't able to. But even with out the clasic Hedwigs theme at every turn thatt we all love to hear, Desplat is epic composong at its best. If you're not able to appriciate this you really need to look into some deep composures; most of which I would recomend to be by Desplat. The sound and instruments change for every song but are still able to sound conected and similar with a running theme. I've loved all Harry Potter themes up til now and I love this one to. I can't wait to see what one of my favorite composers, next to John Williams, will have in store for us in 'part two'.:)

Well done, Monsieur Desplat!

This score is a fantastic fit for the epic drama that runs throughout this film. Reading the reviews I've been seeing a lot of complaining about the near non-existence of "Hedwig's Theme" in Desplat's score. I myself love this widely recognized theme and feel it was absolutely perfect for the cinematic introduction to the world of Harry Potter, but I am quite glad for Desplat's departure from it. This film is an adaptation of a book that stands apart from the rest of the series in many ways. Gone are the days of cutesy themes that immerse us in Harry's pre-teen and teenage world of magic. The last two films have been gradually stepping away from such themes, as well, under the creative eye of Nicholas Hooper. Desplat here delivers a spectrum of emotion that truly complements the film's drama. The exciting and rhythmic action music does just what it is meant to for the viewer/listener, and the more sentimental music if very beautiful; I cannot stop listening to "Farewell to Dobby." The movie is solid, and so is the score.
