A remarkable musical talent
Chris Philpotts is a remarkable musical talent. He's created a varied, colorful collection of original music for this current album project which features his voice as a composer and an improvising woodwind virtuoso. The tunes here are rooted in the modern idiom, wonderfully rhythmic and harmonically rich. The instrumentation is often surprising, interfacing Chris' soaring winds with the sounds of contemporary jazz and world music.
Whether on oboe, English horn or soprano sax, he strikes a balance between beautiful sound, tuning and execution and the spontaneity of extemporaneous music which often asks the performer to go beyond the classical lexicon. Coherent and lyrical, Chris' improvising matches the style and language of the compositions so well it's hard to separate one from the other. This album is a long overdue debut!

Wow!
Chris Philpotts - wow - what an amazing collection of material! There are a lot of talented musicians out there - but they get stuck with a "sound" and it follows them around from album to album. Deep Forest, for instance - is still Deep Forest. You pretty much know what to expect. Chris not only has what it takes to compose a song, he understands the importance of mixing things up in an album. Nothing on this CD lacks character. It's an outstanding piece of work - I'm not ready for his next CD, because I'm not ready to move on from this one.
A joy to hear
Chris Philpotts' " Harvest Song " is clearly work that was put together with great care , skill , and affection . The genre of his music defies simple description and seems to pass effortlessly through jazz , new-age , and classical moments . The music is truly original . His considerable talents on oboe , english horn , and soprano sax along with excellent contributions from colleagues make this recording a joy to hear . This is one not to miss !
