Since the end of the ‘70s Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has issued his own music. He left Aerosmith to form the Joe Perry Project, a hard-rock ensemble with punk and funk attributes, whose I’ve Got the Rock ‘n’ Rolls Again, despite its unfortunate title remains a fine, underrated piece of pure rock power. Years later, in 2005, Perry put together a bluesy self-titled solo album. Aerosmith cancelled its 2009 tour obligations, leaving Perry with the extra downtime to spend in his home studio and fuss around. The result is Have Guitar, Will Travel, a most relaxed and refreshing look at Perry the guitarist and home recorder. Aerosmith albums have always been massive production undertakings, obscuring the contributions of even its main players, but here Perry is all over the place, performing with a looseness that highlights the Yardbirds influence in his playing (“Wooden Ships”) and even lets him sing without straining himself (“Slingshot’). The keyboard-led “Oh Lord (21 Grams)” is creepy and garage-rock-like, something more expected from an indie rocker than this hard-rock veteran.

Artistic work at it's best
It's amazing how much creativity has been put into this album. The hit single "We've Still Got a Long Way to Go" tells us that by no means is Joe Perry ready to stop doing what he does best and that's rockin' his butt off and ripping out awesome riffs! Great work, Joe! On a personal note, it must be such an incredible feeling to be a part of the Perry family where there's so much musical talent. You guys (The Perry family) ROCK!

One Great Record-Old School
This is by FAR, Joe Perry's best work. Although Aerosmith have become a polished pop rock band, Joe goes back to raw, in your face, classic Perry riffs. His guitar playing at it's best in years. Although the songs sound fresh & current, they are rooted in old school rock n roll.
We've Got A Long Way to go- A fast paced rocker w/contemporary synthasizer, along with fast & furious guitar work, packed with hooks and a catchy chorus.
Slingshot- A Soufull Joe Perry on lyrics, an old smokey blusey tune w/ cool lyrics, dirty raw guitar work and a smoldering beat- A gem.
Do You Wonder- The most radio friendly of the bunch- a balad type song w/hooks galore and an infectious chorus- ya just cant help to love & sing this song.
Someone's Gonna Get Thier Head Kicked In Tonight- A Fleetwood Mac remake from way way back- a 50's rocker with plenty of loose & fast guitar work featuring Perry on vocals.
Heaven & Hell- My least favorite on the record- A bit of a muddled song, Perry again on vocals, a slow song that just dosnt go anywhere musically.
Wooden Ships- Instrumental- Nice guitar showcase song demonstrating Joes ability to not only play & write great riffs, but shows his depth at musical arrangements. Crank this One!
No Surprise- Classic Rocker-good vocals, mean lead guitar, just a real good rock tune.
Oh Lord- Joe back on vocals- a slow tempo with Perry begging for mercy with haunting back ground vocals w/ interesting effects and guitar work.
Scare The Cat- The best song on the record- A great turn it LOUD song, basic rocker with infectious riffs, lyrics, very catchy, but still a true hard rocker, this songs compliments best Joe's guitar work w/ his new singer, Hagen.
Freedom- Sort of an anthem type song- Joe's almost Political statement- a fast paced rocker with good guitar work and a nice beat but the chorus & lyrics are a little freshman for a vetran rocker, again Joe on lead vocals.
This is the best record I have purchased in 10 years. If you are an Aerosmith fan & have been waiting for them to return to old school raw hard rock, with out outside song writers, this one is for you. If you like in your face, stripped down rock with out all the special effects, bells and whistles- this one is for you.

Too good to be a side project.
Great new album from Admiral Perry. But it's too good to be considered a side project. Joe does a great job with both his great guitar and his blues style vocals. It's different than his last album but not in a bad way. Hagen also may sound a bit like Steven Tyler to some but he has his own style that goes well with this music. Slingshot, Wooden Ships, Heaven and Hell, and We've Still Got a Long Way to Go, are the best on the album.
