iTunes Review
The glossy tracks and R&B-influenced grooves that earned Point of Grace a string of hits in the ‘90s and early ‘00s have been replaced here by twanging dobros and twinkling mandolins. But as the album’s title indicates, the trio remains firmly rooted in Christian faith, even if their lyrics now emphasize everyday struggles as much as eternal verities. No Changin’ Us unfolds like a series of small-town postcards, illuminated by the trio’s rich harmonies and Nathan Chapman’s warm, acoustic-based production. The well-observed details in “Hometown” and the title tune evoke heartland scenes, while “Love and Laundry” and “The Greatest Show On Earth” are wry, spot-on glimpses of family life. The songs most explicitly about spiritual growth — especially “A Good Place to Turn Around” and “What About Jesus” — feel like stories rather than sermons. No Changin’ Us closes with “Come to Jesus,” a moving alter call with a shimmering sonic patina. Point of Grace sound like they’ve come home at last.
Customer Reviews
AWESOME AS ALWAYS
They just keep doing AMAZING work! This album is a step up for the group as they blend some Country in with "HOMETOWN", "LOVE AND LAUNDRY", "A GOOD PLACE TO TURN AROUND" and "NO CHANGIN US" and then they have the Praise song like "THERE IS NOTHING GREATER THAN GRACE" and "COME TO JESUS"! There is not a bad song on this album! Another HOMERUN for POINT OF GRACE! ENJOY!
Harmonies awesome as always, but harder to relate to
Point of Grace's harmonies are as tight as ever in this album. They're very intricately woven together and the group sounds great! I'm not very sure how I feel about Point of Grace going country - I loved their pop music and part of me is sad that this era of theirs may be gone for good.
As a result, it's not surprising that my favorite two songs on this album are "Nothing Greater than Grace" and "Come to Jesus". While they still have a country feel to them, they are the most "poppy" songs, and among the easiest to relate to.
As a guy, it's not really possible to relate to songs about being a mother and other everyday lady things. Songs like "Great Divide" and "My God" from the past made it so anybody could relate to them. I feel that with this album, their scope/audience they're trying to reach out to has shrunk (complete focus on girls/women, and maybe even mother-aged women).
With all that being said, though, this is a solid effort from the Point of Grace trio.
Once again POG does not disappoint!
I've been a fan of Point of Grace since their first release, and I'm glad they are still around! With two of the original singers gone, and one new member, POG's sound has changed. This album almost has a country sound to it, but I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I like it. They are one of the only artists that I own every single CD of theirs, and this will be no different. Another great bunch of songs to add to my collection!
