Album Review
1978 was a difficult year of transition for the Babys: The group parted ways with founding member Michael Corby during sessions for their new album, and the remaining members finished the album only to have their record company reject it in its initial form. The Babys regrouped, recorded a few new tracks to finish the album, and then headed out on tour with newly recruited members Jonathan Cain and Ricky Philips. Head First, the album that resulted from this tumultuous time, is energetic but a bit schizophrenic in terms of style: Lushly orchestrated songs like "White Lightning" continue on in the orchestrated AOR style of Broken Heart while songs like "Love Don't Prove I'm Right" return to the stripped-down rock sound that characterized The Babys. As a result, Head First feels more like a collection of songs than a true album. The album's sense of inconsistency is further deepened by the presence of some underwritten songs: "California" has an atmospheric sound but drifts on without a solid sense of structure, and "White Lightning" undercuts its powerful sense of dynamics with some rather silly lyrics. Just the same, the album has enough good songs to counterbalance these weaknesses: The title track balances surging bass-driven verses with a piano-laced chorus to create one of the Babys' finest rockers, and "Every Time I Think of You" is a beautifully crafted, heartfelt power ballad that gave the group its second big hit. In the end, Head First isn't strong enough to recommend to the casual listener but offers plenty of well-crafted music for fans of the Babys.

Babys showing versatility..
Everyone is familiar with the excellent title track & the ballad Every Time..... but a couple others that projected that early 70's sound also impressed me. California & You (Got It) stand out. Run to Mexico & Love Don't Prove I'm Right kinda picked up where Head First left off. Please Don't Leave Me Here is probably my "sleeper" favorite. My kinda power ballad!
Melodic Power Pop Rock At Its Best !!!
I was always a huge fan of The Babys ever since I heard their great track, "Isn't It Time". The 1978 release "Head First" was their best overall album in my opinion as singer John Waite artistically came into his own on this one with his own unique, distinctive vocal style and usual abundant attitude.
The firing from the band of multi-talented guitarist, Michael Corby, who originally formed the band, due to continuous run ins between him and Waite was extremely untimely as it happened during the middle of putting together "Head First". However, with a change in direction that ensued thereafter, the band came out with a more sonically sleek, energetic sound with a more basic, direct simplicity as gone was the previous towering orchestration wall of sound of their previous albums. Additionally, with Waite further maturing and coming into his own as a singer and developing his own style, this appeared to transform the rest of the band into a more confident, tighter unit as they proved to balance both hard and soft power pop-rock wonderfully.
From the infectious lead guitar riff of the title track with its great combination of raw power and finesse to the beauty of the wonderful romantic power ballad, "Every Time I Think Of You", all 9-songs off "Head First" flow extremely well together. You can definitely hear the influences of early Free, Bad Company, The Faces, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, and Humble Pie's Steve Marriott evident throughout in the material.
A must have album for fans of classic melodic power pop-rock mixed in with well crafted, extraordinarily smooth ballads.....
Dont put the Babys in a corner...
Raw simple grooves, a properly mic'd drumset and Waite's excellent words, sung in his melodic timbre. Perfection.
