Album Review
Produced by metal guru Bob Rock, Tonic's heavy-handed Head on Straight takes dead aim at arena rock circa 2002 via strong melodies, big choruses, thick, domineering guitars, and a solid backbeat. Singer Emerson Hart proudly wears a broken heart on his tattered sleeve, especially on anthemic cuts such as "Take Me As I Am," "Do You Know," and "Believe Me," all of which showcase his expansive range and captivating emotive style evocative of Bono, Michael Hutchence, and Eddie Vedder. Guitarist Jeff Russo's pentatonic riffs, shimmering harmonics, and engaging arpeggios provide a perfect canvas for Hart's bellow and bassist Dan Lavery's funky staccato lines. Waxing political in "Irish" ("I won't die for England") and working out a blues mojo in "Rest Your Head," Tonic exudes confidence and conviction on a grand collection sans filler.
Customer Reviews
Superb!
"Take Me As I Am," "Believe Me," and "Do You Know" are great songs. It sounds a little different from back in the "If You Could Only See" days, but this disc is still great.
INCREDIBLE
This is one of the most underrated and unappreciated Pop Rock albums of all time. It was nominated for a Grammy and "Take Me As I Am" was nominated as well, but it didn't get the commercial recognition deserved. Every song on this album is a pop rock gem with incredible hooks, melodies, production, vocals and musicianship. A must have for any Tonic fan or pop-rock lover!
Good Stuff!
I was pleasantly surprised by this album - I was a huge tonic fan when I was younger, but just stopped paying attention after a while. This album pretty much just snuck up on me, and it's very well done. The tonalities and crativity shine through, as well as the overall productin quality of the album. It's still very much an album that sounds like the tonic we all know and love, but it's a great evolution from "Sugar" and "Lemon Parade". Well done - fun album. Pick it up if you liked their last 2 at all!
