Neil's most underrated album

Ironically named, "Headed for the Future" marked Neil Diamond's final attempt to produce contemporary music before being relegated to the ash heap of "Adult Contemporary", which is really just a euphemism for yesterday's news. What is so surprising, however, is that Neil went out with a bang--literally. In an era that saw Neil churn out one overproduced love song after another, "Headed for the Future" sits nearer to pop or even rock than any of his other albums. The eponymous track and "Stand Up for Love" border on what, at the time, was considered rock, while the ballad "It Should Have Been Me" begs for a Whitesnake cover. For those who are more comfortable with Neil's own comfort zone, the love song "The Story of My Life" and "The Man You Need" are two of Diamond's best songs, period, despite the fact that they remain largely unsung and unknown. "Headed for the Future," as a whole, represents Neil's finest achievement of the eighties, with the possible exception of some his work on "The Jazz Singer". While the lyrics on some of the filler tracks leave something to be desired, the music would remain Neil Diamond's most innovative until the "12 Songs" album, nearly 20 years later.
