iTunes Review

Time has shown that the Monkees were more than faux Beatles or Byrds. The so-called Pre-Fab Four may have been a TV series creation, but their records were often works of genuine inspiration and artistic ambition. The group lobbied hard to play their own instruments in the studio, and with Headquarters (1967) they got their wish. With ace pop producer Chip Douglas at the helm, Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith took long strides towards proving themselves as a bona fide pop/rock band on this eclectic album. Nesmith especially stands out as a songwriter here, contributing the psychedelic-tinged “You Just May Be The One” and the countrified “You Told Me.” Dolenz romps through the lovably goofy “Randy Scouse Git,” while Tork shines with the utopian “For Pete’s Sake.” “Early Morning Blues And Greens” (a quaintly alienated tune) and “Shades Of Gray” (a thought-provoking look at moral ambiguity) feature Jones’ nicely nuanced vocals. Four decades later, Headquarters holds up better than many supposedly hipper albums of its era. Far from being disposable teenybopper fare, this album demonstrates why the Monkees remain a beloved pop/rock combo.

Cherry delight

For all monkees fans out there, this is the must own record. This is the one that shead the boys"t.v band" image and turned them into a real band. Best songs: for pete's sake and randy scouse git.

Simplistic yet pleasing

This album is very nice, and most of you buying it know it's history so I'll skip the history lesson. Musically the tunes are simple, fun and entertaining. The sound is sometimes thin, but is certainly fuller than The Monkees first album. As good as this was the best part of the Monkees career as a foursome would be their next album, but this one suits me just fine.

The BEST the Monkees have to offer!

My only introduction to the Monkees was their "now & then" tape, and when I found this in my mother's collection and started listening to it, I couldn't put it down. I listened to it so many times that I wore out the tape!
"For Pete's Sake" and "Shades of Gray" are my favorites, followed closely by the random "Zilch" and somewhat depressing "Mr. Webster"
If you are a Monkees' fan, this is a must have album!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s

Formed primarily for the purpose of starring in a television series, the Monkees were on one hand a cynically manufactured group, devised to cash in on the early Beatles' success by applying the most superficial aspects of the British Invasion formula to capture a preteen audience. On the other hand,...
