Album Review

With Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels having left Shalamar and been replaced by singer Delisa Davis and guitarist/Prince admirer Micki Free, Howard Hewett unveiled a new Shalamar lineup on Heart Break. Although the loss of Watley and Daniels was quite a loss for the group, it wasn't a fatal blow. In fact, Heart Break was good enough to indicate that there might be life after Watley and Daniels for Shalamar, mainly because the trio still had Hewett's talent and charisma to rely on. Hewett is clearly the one holding down the fort on Heart Break, which finds Shalamar continuing to incorporate new wave elements. Heart Break (which The Right Stuff reissued on CD in 1998) boasted the wildly infectious, rock-influenced hit from Footloose "Dancing in the Sheets," and the combination of soul-pop and new wave also proved quite appealing on "My Girl Loves Me," "Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills" and the George Duke-produced "Amnesia." Also impressive is Howard and Davis' charming duet on the ballad "Whenever You Need Me." As it turned out, Heart Break would be Hewett's last album with Shalamar, as well as the last decent Shalamar album.

The Last Hurrah for Shalamar

by JLeeJr

HEARTBREAK was the first post Jody Watley/Jeffrey Daniels album from Shalamar. Lead singer Howard Hewett was joined on this outing by guitarist Miki Free and Tennessee native keyboardist/vocalist Delisa Davis. Also, longtime producer Leon F Sylvers III is replaced by jazz/fusion star George Duke, Bill Wolfer, Rufus member Hawk Wolinski, Klymaxx member Fenderella, and Hewitt himself.

Two of the tracks, "Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills" and the top 20 pop hit "Dancing In The Sheets", made previous appearances on the multi-platinum soundtracks BEVERLY HILLS COP and FOOTLOOSE respectively. The "Dead Giveaway" knockoff "Amnesia" crawled on the Billboard Hot 100, while the mid-tempo electro-thumper "My Girl Loves Me" became an underground favorite among Shalamar fans.

Hewitt is quite the standout on such tunes as the Fenderella-written title track, and the aforementioned "My Girl Loves Me" and "Dancing In The Sheets", while Delisa Davis' soft voice on the ballad "Whenever You Need Me" is pleasant, but pales in comparison to Jody Watley. However, Hewitt's stellar vocals cannot save the weak synth-drenched "Deceiver", and the meandering "Melody (An Erotic Affair)".

Overall, an entertaining but ho-hum way to end the Hewitt period of Shalamar.

Shalamar was the creation of Dick Griffey, the booking agent for the television R&B program Soul Train, and British R&B producer Simon Soussan. The group's first single, the 1977 Motown medley "Uptown Festival," featured a bevy of faceless studio musicians; once it became a hit, Griffey decided...
