iTunes Review
After his major-label band Whiskeytown broke up, Ryan Adams signed with indie alt-country label Bloodshot and made his masterful solo debut, largely with the help of producer Ethan Johns and the totemic duo of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Packed with great stuff for the No Depression crowd - the epically bereft "Come Pick Me Up" may be his fans' favorite song, and if Buck Owens ever makes another record, it should have "To Be Young" on it. Heartbreaker also scores with moments of baroque pop ("AMY") and a ballad in the Lennonesque-confessional mode ("Sweet Lil Gal"). Finally, Adms wins points for his self-description "as calm as a fruit stand in New York and maybe as strange."

Adams' Excellent Solo Debut
Here we have an incredibly solid first-time solo record for our Ryan Adams. This is the Ryan Adams we knew before his ego consumed his career. Here Adams can be found at his most focused, most natural, and least "stagey", which is a lot less than can be said for his later albums. The songs work very well from the fun rockabilly kickoff tune "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)" to lovely little songs like "Amy" and "Oh My Sweet Carolina". Ryan Adams is (or was at a time) one of the brightest talents in the music-making business and after listening to songs like "Don't Ask for the Water" it becomes clear that the Dylan comparions weren't entirely unwarranted. "Heartbreaker" remains Adams' tightest, most focused album. For anyone with any sort of Alt-Country itch, or just some sort of Ryan Adams itch in general, "Heartbreaker" hits the spot.
My Desert Island Disc
After the breakup of Whiskeytown, the band's frontman, Ryan Adams, put together this gem after he had broken up with a music industry publicist named Amy. This isn't only the best breakup album of all-time...it's my favorite album of all-time. Pretty ballsy statement? Absolutely. But I've been listening to this album all the way through on a regular basis for years now. And I NEVER get tired of it. Each listen reveals the intimacies of Ryan's incredible compositions. The lyrics are deeply personal....and among the best I've ever heard. "Come Pick Me Up" may be one of the best songs ever written by anyone. No matter what kind of music you prefer, no record collection should be without "Heartbreaker." If I end up lost on a desert island, this is the one CD I'm taking with me. Note: For a real treat, some night put yourself in a totally dark room and listen to this album from start to finish. It'll move you, sometimes to tears.
listen to the music and ignore jimmy boy
"Are you a 15-year-old TRL addict looking for a step up from Sum 41 and American Hi-Fi?"...then listen to jimmy eats world like the other reviewer... if you are looking for "A startling 15-song masterpiece...an ode to sadness that deals exclusively with all the dark and dirty corners of the human heart...music written in the language of loneliness, depression, and, above all, heartbreak, in all its varied forms...then buy this now...you wont be disappointed...
