Album Review

While it deals with heartbreak and pain and comes packaged in creepy-sweet artwork that Tim Burton would approve, Heartbroken & Homicidal is not rap-rock duo Twiztid’s entry into the emo craze. No “scene hair” or sniveling here, just straight-up mayhem and disgust from the Psychopathic label’s secret weapon who just keep evolving, whether anyone from the outside world notices or not. Here, the group’s loyal following is treated to an odd, avant classical orchestral intro — dissonant French horns and all — before the lurching zombie beat of “Spiderwebs” comes in, as the duo churns and foams over ex-girlfriends who dare to wear mini-skirts to the bar. The track never decides whether obsession or infidelity is worse, but after a decade of writing rhymes, Twiztid have grown in strength and sometimes choose observational over declamatory. The funky key cut “Apple” is actually a cautionary tale, feeling the pain of an elder generation too broke to retire while offering some proactive personal finance advice (“This is your future, lo and behold/A lifetime of debt and an enormous workload”). If this sounds like they’ve gone soft, member Monoxide acts as producer for most of the album, packaging these mature, bummer messages in grinding beats and dark soundscapes that recall the group’s early work. Well done, once again, not that anyone who is “hip” would ever admit it.

Very Very Different From What We Know Of Twiztid- But Awesome

I purchased on hatchet gear and got on friday and waiting all these months you cant help but rip open the plastic and shove that sucker into the player, hey it's Twiztid. Spiderwebs was amazing amazing amazing way to open a new chapter from Twiztid. I absolutely loved the vibe I got especially with the first 20 seconds. Man this cd is going to be great. Then getting into the next few songs was very different but in a good way. Dont expect W.I.C.K.E.D. or any other of their albums- well maybe Mutant with all the rock. Finishing this cd I was like WOW!!! This is freaking crazy cool. This album is still wicked to me. If you didnt like it the first time around just keep playing it over and over- youll love it. I love the fact that it wasnt wicked. After wicked I wanted wicked part 2 but this cd was spectacular and I give much props to their creativity. Thanks Twiztid!

Jamie Madrox and the Monoxide Child cast themselves as psychotic axe murderers on their 1998 debut album, Mostasteless, which was reissued with new artwork and extra tracks a year later in the wake of ICP's rise to national notoriety. Twiztid's second album, Freek Show, was released on Halloween 2000...
