iTunes Review
Fredrik Balck and Maria Lindén of the Stockholm duo I Break Horses met one another through an online medical forum for hypochondriacs before realizing that they had similar musical tastes. Their 2011 debut album, Hearts, mirrors this curious bond, with dreamy, shoegaze-textured songs that largely muse on life’s fragile nature. “Winter Beats” makes good on its title, with icy synths and electro flourishes glistening like fresh snowfall under pulsing beats. Over this, Lindén’s gauzy coos intertwine with Balck’s androgynous inflections; they sound like the offspring of My Bloody Valentine’s Bilinda Butcher and Kevin Shields. On the title track, the warm static of guitar distortion undulates over heartbeat rhythms as Balck and Lindén’s sublime singing takes a hushed, fluff-on-the-needle approach. Lindén sings lead on “Wired,” with New Order–inspired drum machine patterns backing up unpredictable melodies. Some otherworldly-sounding synthesizers lace the hauntingly beautiful “Cancer,” where Lindén sings minimal parts under comforting krautrock-tinged oscillations.

This is the new breed of shoegaze and i love it. A little cocteau twins, sprinkled with a bit of my bloody valentine finished off with a dusting of M83. It all leaves a lush orgasmic sound in ones ears. Pure bliss.
