Album Review
Heartwork marks Carcass' return after the self-imposed hiatus that followed 1991's Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious. It's also the pioneering grindcore outfit's breakthrough release, successfully grafting melody onto the existing muscle of Carcass' punishing antimusic. After a blistering opening salvo, the title track decelerates into a mid-tempo guitar lead, only to shift gears into a meaty verse that suggests the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. "Carnal Forge" and "Arbeit Macht Fleisch" are compacted with intricate, overlapping riffs that are relentless in their move forward, and yet there's still a sense of structure and melody, buried somewhere amid the carnage. Jeff Walker's vocals are consistent in their throat-ripping fierceness throughout the record, especially on "This Is Your Life," which messes with mixing to make the track truly arresting if listened to with headphones. While of normal album length, Heartwork nevertheless seems over too quickly, as if its bloodthirsty front end bit off its own backside. Some purists might decry its melodic breaks for soloing or nods toward conventional structure. But Heartwork is that rare album that so carefully dissects and reconstructs its original form that its additional body parts seem like they were there all along.
Customer Reviews
INSANELY EXCELLENT if i do say so myself
i checked this album out one day and im glad to say i have been coming back for more ever sinse. true, its not the same CARCASS is was before, but with an album like this, theres really nothing to complain about. not that anyones complaining... i dont really have a favorite, basically all of these songs will just pound into your ears till you cant take it anymore and it just keeps on pounding. i love it. you should too. ROCK ON \m/
It can't get any better than this
Before Heartwork, Carcass had used gory medical accidents as lyrics, and double vocals, but not anymore. Heartwork is the very album that started the whole melodeath thing, no joke. This is so much better than their old albums, cause this was the time guitar god Michael Amott was in the band. If you like metal, death metal, or melodeath, this is the album for you
There is no better Death Metal.
I've been listening to metal for the majority of my life. And I've been listening to Death Metal for about 3-4 years. I've listened/listen to Cannibal Corpse, The Black Dahlia Murder, At The Gates, Behemoth, The Red Chord, etc. But Carcass is EASILY one of the best. If not THE best, of them all. Honestly I got sick of the constant machine-gun sound, drilling you in the face (aka Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Deicide, etc.) and wanted Death Metal with a sound that stood out and was musical but remained in the Death Metal genre. And no band fits that better than Carcass. This band is absolutly AMAZING and it is a shame to hear that they broke up. This album is absolutly incredible and I can only hope more fans of Death Metal will take inspiration from this record.
