Unbelievable.
This guy has such a recognizable voice. It's like Johnny Cash and Chris Isaak had a love child, and named him Jake Hill. The album is simple, yet colorful. Great Stuff!
Songs. Great songs.
Jake Hill is one of the rare songwriters of today that doesn't have to wear a sexy hat or an Ed Hardy shirt to get your attention. Seeing Jake live is what I imagine seeing a guy like Dylan or Neil Young would be like in the early parts of their careers. I would sit amazed by the sound, yet curious as to why I'm not sitting in a sold out theater somewhere with a line of teenage girls standing outside. Jake Hill writes songs. Simple as that. However, what sets him apart from most people that write songs is that his songs are great. This record is a great collection of his stuff and the production is so perfectly modest that it really captures Jake's essence. In short. Buy this.
Heave To
Folk music is simple but wise. Jake Hill sticks to the truth by greeting the ups and downs of life with a weary yet unconquerable grin on his new album "Heave To." the tracks are about people, places, love, home, regret, death, and the awareness of it all. "Cold Cold World" is an upbeat acceptance of raw reality. "Simple Now" hurts. "Michaela" is personal. "Bird Food" conveys a bit of hope to the lonely and broken hearted. The song, "Heave To" is a reminder of the unknown yet sure arrival of death; "it's a choke out, not a hug." Simple and wise, "Heave To" will have you involuntarily tapping your foot through out it all.
