Discover Magazine Meets Max's Kansas City

Somewhere between Television, the Seeds, Talking Heads, the Milkshakes, and a graduate course in neuroscience, you'll find this wonderful and unique debut by the Amygdaloids, a band that features leading neuroscientist Joseph Ledoux. Remarkably, virtually all of the lyrics deal with Ledoux's work, and yet the words are witty, engaging, and even tender. The music is heavily influenced by 1977 - 1980 New York downtown rock -- the shadow of Tom Verlaine and Lenny Kaye are all over this album -- with some significant nods to 60s garage rock and mersey beat. And a few songs -- especially "When The Night Is Dark" -- hints at an emotional and musical depth that shows that the Amygdaloids provide a listening experience that absolutely transcends the completely amazing 'gimmick' of having a band led by one of the rising stars of American science. Fans of early Television, Richard Hell, the Feelies, or just anyone intrigued by poetry inspired by the amazing and complicated world of the human brain will find this CD interesting.

refreshing sound and theme

Who would think that neuroscience would make its way into rock? But here it is, and the result is both surprising in its freshnesh and disarmingly naive passion. I found myself being slowly captivated by its retro sound, its inventive lyrics and catchy tunes! Its not Cold Play, but who needs another Cold Play?

Amygdaloids: Sweet Music from Their Brain to Our Hearts

Amygdaloids: Sweet Music from Their Brain to Our Hearts With sweet vocal delivery and honey toned guitars The Amygdaloids serve up a retro sounding feel good record called HEAVY MENTAL. The songs are smart and fun. It's reassuring that these brain scientists who formed this adorable band are contemplating the same kinds of heart issues that we all face. "Mind Body Problem" relates the tale of a guy who woefully says, 'My body wants you so... my mind says no' This song is all the more funny coming from a protagonist who should know better and is analyzing the situation as a Mind Body Problem. "When the Night is Dark" is another standout tune which surprises with the line, 'Daylight comes and scares me awake' Ah, aint that the truth! Why can't night last forever so we can all just stay at home and listen to good records like this one.
