Album Review
On their first album, It's Classy, Not Classic, Breathe Carolina unleashed one of the stranger emo records you're likely to hear. Its blending of cheesy club music and heartfelt pop emo was kind of awkward but also very endearing. The follow-up, Hello Fascination, finds the duo of David Schmitt and Kyle Even heading down the same path, but this time the disparate sounds are much more smoothly integrated and the album makes more sonic sense. It can still be a little jarring to try to absorb a song like "I'm the Type of Person to Take It Personal," which has elements of stadium techno in the thundering synths, disco rhythms, chunky heavy metal power chords, screamo vocals, wispy emo-lite vocals, and a hook that says "POP" in giant letters, but the effort is worth it if you are a fan of pop music that has no socially redeeming values. The rest of the album is just as head-spinning and jam-packed with weirdness, from vocodered vocals straight out of Daft Punk and Europop tunes that sound like a punked-up Roxette to oddly recorded ballads, glam rock backbeats, and giddy video game sounds. It's an approach that sets the band apart from the cookie-cutter hordes of emo pop bands and — more than that — it's super fun, good-time pop music. Breathe Carolina may be disposable pop music and Hello Fascination won't top any year-end critics polls, but while it is playing, the goofy lyrics, bubblegum snappy melodies, and overall feeling of joyousness will make you feel good. What could be better than that?

Here's the breakdown. 1. Hello Fascinatoin - 9.5/10 - At first when they released this single I wasn't so hot on it but it definitely grew on me. Classic Breathe Carolina. 2. I'm the Type of Person to Take It Personal - 8.3/10 - Slow. Fast. Slow. Fast. Hectic, it's alright in some parts, not so much in others. 3. Take Me to Infinity - 8.7/10 - One of the more pop-ish songs on the album. It reminds me of the band Cash Cash for some reason. 4. Dressed Up to Undress - 9/10 - This song is really upbeat and makes you want to get up and party. 5. I.D.G.A.F. - 8.5/10 - Kind of a confusing song in the chorus. It's not too bad, just the chorus is kind of weird. 6. Welcome to Savannah - 9.7/10 - The first song released via the Fearless Records Summer Sampler. It's very catchy and also pretty classic Breathe Carolina. 7. I Have to Go Return Some Video Tapes - 9/10 - Funny title. Fun song. 8. The Dressing Room - 10/10 - GREAT SONG. 9. Tripped and Fell In Portland - 8.6/10 - Definitely more of the rock/punk direction for them in this song. Not bad, just different. 10. Can I Take You Home? - 9/10 - Slower song but sick beat. I love this song. 11. My Obsession - 8.7/10 - Another song that's a bit slower and it's alright nothing too crazy. 12. Velvet - 8.4/10 - Another different direction for Breathe Carolina... like pop/punk-ish. 13. Rescue - 8.5/10 - The longest track on the album... and you can tell... it kind of drags on slowly, I like the chorus but the rest is just eh... And there's Hello Fascination track by track. Top Picks from Me: -The Dressing Room -Hello Fascination -Welcome to Savannah -Dressed Up To Undress -I Have to Go Return Some Video Tapes -Can I Take You Home? and maybe -Take Me to Infinity Great Album, 5 Stars.
Hello, I'm Fascinated
Some might say the sound is different, I would more consider it to have matured. Breathe Carolina has grown into their skin and spread their wings and taken off! This album shows a lot of maturity in Breathe's musical tallent. "I'm the type of person to take this personal." has really made an impact on me, the band has given their songs real depth on this album. Kudos. A band that was able to harness a sound and develope it. Thank you for what you have given me.
what happened to Breathe?
Im a huge fan of Breathe Carolina's first album, but Hello Fascination is a huge step down for them. Welcome to Savannah is one of the few high points to the album, along with Hello Fascination. i Find them both to show how BC has grown yet they still managed to keep elements from It's Classy, Not Classic which is exactly what they should have done with the rest of the album. Although I appreciate their addition of actual instruments in their songs, they ruined that by adding such extremely poppy beats to a point where they sound like they were taken from some crappy song off of a Hannah Montana album. But when they do manage to find the occasional good beat, such as in "Can I Take You Home?," it's overshadowed by the cheesy immature lyrics, although that never seemed to be a strong point for them in either album. Also, I feel like this album is all david's vocals and very few screams from Kyle which just adds to the mainstream element this album is overpowered with. The reason I give the album 3 stars is because despite how poppy Hello Fascination is, I know that the very catchy beats will grow on everyone and will add to their popularity and fanbase. I hope this proves true and they use this success to take their 3rd album in a completely different direction.
