A Collection of Singles
This, sadly, is just a collection of some really hit-or-miss cover songs. This really could've been an awesome retooling of TMBG, but missed its mark entirely when each artist went in a completely different direction than their counterparts. Self's rendition of "Ana Ng" is really the best song on the album. It manages to capture the feeling of the original without being too similar. The Long Winter's "Pet Name" is pretty good, if a little boring. Steve Burns' "Dead" is really interesting and different, but may not suit everyone's tastes (if you like Frou Frou or the Flaming Lips, you'll like it). I really like Ok Go, but their version of "Letterbox" is...not great. "Don't Let's Start" and "Doctor Worm" are practically unlistenable. It just sounds like teenage kids tooling around in their basement. I really liked Brett Kull's "Another First Kiss", but that may be because it sounds a lot like the original. Overall, I wouldn't buy this album for the merit of the collection. I'm going to stick to individual songs on this bad boy.
A handful of really cool tracks...
This tribute is, like all tribute albums, a mixed bag. But the highlights are very worthwhile: I would love to hear more music from Self, Frank Black's take on Road Movie is a lot of fun, and The Wrens and Hotel Lights respective contributions send shivers down my spine. Then, there a few really strong pop/rock cuts (Steve Burns, David Miller and Fluid Ounces), and some really great/of-the-wall lo-fi stuff (OK Go, Recepter). As tribute albums go, all in all this one's pretty decent. But, be warned: you really have to shed any attachment to these songs as you are used to hearing them. These versions definitely stray from TMBG's sound.
this is an amazing compliation
