Album Review

Following the flawed Mr. Jordan, Julian Lennon returned to straight-ahead pop with Help Yourself, which recalled the work of his father more than any of his other records. On Help Yourself, Lennon never seemed to be cannibalizing his father's songs; instead, he appeared to be learning from the Beatles, writing songs that were more carefully constructed than his previous work. Most of the record featured strong hooks and melodies, indicative of his songwriting progression, with the gorgeous "Saltwater" as the best evidence of his improved songwriting abilities.

saltwater is julian's imagine

I had this in cassette years ago and I'm happy to find it here if only for saltwater. I remember I loved the whole "cassette" but this song stayed with me for years. This is Julian's version of his father's Imagine.... just beautiful!

Help Yourself -- Julian Lennon

Lennon is at his best when his music echoes his father's compositions. Previous albums have had some gems that stand up favorably to the best of the Beatles. Unfortunately, in this album / CD we only get a glimpse of this genius with Saltwater. There are a couple of other songs, "Maybe I Was Wrong" and "Other Side of Town" that are musically interesting and well worth listening to, but they do not have the haunting character and strength of "Salterwater", or "And She Cries", "Cold" (both from Photograph Smile) and, of course "Valotte". I wish this musician would quit trying to get out of his father's shadow and instead make it larger.

Nice Nice (Very Nice)

Julian Lennon -- wow, what to say? This guy is talented, and has crafted some real great songs over the years. Listen to "Listen," for example. Tell me that song is something his old man couldn't have written. It's amazing sometimes.

The son of John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia, Julian Lennon parlayed a remarkable vocal similarity to his father into a moderately successful singing career during the 1980s. John Charles Julian Lennon was born on April 8, 1963, in Liverpool, and as a child, inspired several Beatles compositions: "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" reportedly arose out of a drawing Julian made of a classmate, and following his parents' divorce, he became the subject of Paul McCartney's sympathetic "Hey Jude."
