iTunes Review

While the pop success of 1980's Permanent Waves made Rush a fixture on the hard rock scene, 1978's Hemispheres did much to establish its credentials among the prog-rock crowd. Featuring just four songs of great conceptual thrust and virtuoso musicianship, Hemispheres is not an album to be taken casually or lightly. It demands serious concentration. The eighteen-minute opening track, "Cygnus X-1 Book 2 Hemispheres," cut into five concrete sections (six, if Apollo and Dionysus are taken separately), delves heavily into the tug of war between reason and emotion, and musically tugs at various dissonant factors, as Geddy Lee's familiar shriek must overcome the torrent of guitar riffs and chords from Alex Lifeson and the never-let-up percussion of drummer Neil Peart. "Circumstances" and "The Trees" are closer to conventional rockers, yet with much more serious philosophical concerns than your average hard rock. "La Villa Strangiato" is a multi-parted instrumental overture that never shies from attempting an extra flourish in the effort to out-duel whatever its perceived instrumental competition might be.

The Perfect Balance

It has taken me more than fifteen years to figure out which Rush outing is my favorite. They have had an incredible run of great albums from Fly By Night (75) straight on through to Signals (82). Each album is unique, and "changes aren't permanent, but change is," seems to be a mantra for this Canadian Art Rock Trio. Hemispheres is really the last of the lengthly prog material, yet it's sprinkled with hints of what was to come on Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. Track 1, Cygnus X-1 Book II (Hemispheres) is down right breathtaking. It comes in strong, has a few sharp turns, and leaves as light as a feather. The real treat is that Hemispheres is a lyrical feast for the ancient Greek soul. The gods of Love (Dionysus) and Reason (Apollo) sought alone to rule the fate of man. Every soul a battlefield. What a premise, and it clocks in at just over 18 minutes. Track 2, Circumstances, is a solid shorter song with deep lyrics about possible suicide. Track 3, The Trees, is another impressive sonic yet intelectual sonnet about the evil's of communism. "...and the trees were all made equal by hatchet, axe and saw." Lastly Track 4, La Villa Strangiato, is a 9 minute climactic instrumental opera. It will take your breath away. Hemispheres is a unique rock opera, and you would be greatly rewarded by placing this album in your collection. Overall this is a 5 star review. Hemispheres really is the perfect balance.

Classic

La Villa Strangiato has been blowing my mind since 1978, classic album

WOW

I was introduced to Rush by "A Farewell to Kings" and "Hemisphere". Peart is nothing short of a brilliant lyricist. The signature epic, "Cygnus X-1: Hemispheres" is the human mind's conflict between emotion and reason, portrayed by Apollo and Dionysus. It's not the "space-epic" anthem "Cygnus X-1" is, but it is a masterful epic. "The Trees" is a sort of Orwellian song; and "La Villa Strangiato" is just a pleasure to the ear. Rush is, to me, an icon of rock 'n roll, and the results of suberb musical collaboration.
