iTunes Review
Upon Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970, the floodgates opened for Hendrix product. This 1972 release proved to be one of the superior issues. The recordings are from four sources: Winterland, San Francisco, 1968, San Diego Sports Arena, 1969, the Berkeley Community Center, 1970, and the Isle of Wight, 1970. It is all prime Hendrix. His playing is spirited and light years away from the competition. And if one needed a single, concise live album to explain the Hendrix myth, this is as good a starting point as any. The medley of “God Save The Queen” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” is inspired. “Little Wing” is a pure Hendrix ballad. “Spanish Castle Magic” is an underrated powerhouse. “Red House” provides solid blues. The covers of “Johnny B. Goode” and “Blue Suede Shoes” prove what Hendrix did to rock ‘n’ roll. He stuck it into an electric socket and changed the world.

Waited A Long Time For This!
I have this on vinyl, acquired in the late '90's, and have always wanted to see it re-released by Experience Hendrix. This is a great live document comprising a handful of performances from different shows from 1968-70. Every cut here displays the typical explosive Hendrix live sound. It's a treat to hear Little Wing and Red House, among the others. Red House, especially, is probably the best version you'll hear anywhere. Little Wing wasn't performed live regularly, which makes it somewhat of a rarity here. A great collection for Hendrix fans, with a nice re-mastered sound. Highly recommended.
Finally!
I echo P Alberto's commentary above. I have had the vinyl since I bought it as a cutout in the late 70s, and it has always been my go-to Jimi album. I particularly love Red House here - best version I've heard as well. Also love Jimi's personality coming through with the between song banter with the crowd - Complete showman at the top of his game! Hard to believe he's been gone over 40 years!
RIP Jimi
Hendrix in the West--A great starting point
On the day I turned sixteen, I made the short trek from Wadesboro to Rockingham and picked this one up on 8-track. I promptly wore it out. Since then I've had the domestic and German import vinyl, although I don't recall seeing this one on the early Reprise CD releases.
I'll echo earlier reviewers that this one is spirited, intense Jimi---a fantastic way to be introduced to this supremely talented guitarist. "Rainbow Bridge" was my other early favorite as I later backtracked to the earlier studio masterpieces. You simply cannot go wrong with this one.
