Album Review

Delivered five years after their eponymous "black" album in 1991, Load captures Metallica settling into a period of maturation. Under the guidance of producer Bob Rock, Metallica have streamlined their sound, cutting away most of the twisting, unpredictable time signatures and the mind-numbingly fast riffs. What's left is polished heavy metal. They add in Southern boogie rock, country-rock, and power ballads to their bag of tricks, which make them sound like '70s arena rock holdovers. Metallica opens up their sound by concentrating on midtempo boogie — over half the album is dedicated to songs that just groove. Metallica sound tight, but with the material they've written, they should sound loose. This becomes apparent as the songs fill out the album's nearly 80-minute running time. It isn't surprising to hear Metallica get a little more conservative as they get older.

How To Break Up With Your Girlfriend

by Todd the Joker

I once had a girlfriend that I wanted to breakup with, but really didn't know how to do it without hurting her feelings. A friend of mine suggested that I could "Sh** the Bed". It was a good laugh. Of course, I never did it, but Metallic has. They must not want me around anymore. The only thing that will bring me back is a new mattress.

DIfferent and amazing!

I love this record. Metallica has proven that they can progress and they have balls big enough to do it-not many other bands are as brave. I could care less about the fact that they cut their hair and were dressing a little snazzier. They are making the music they want to make and don't give a f**k about what everyone else thinks. Hasn't that been Metallica's motto from day one? All you hard core 'fans' ought to know better than that. Whining about the length of their hair and their dress suits is really immature and shallow in my opinion. I surely wouldn't want James, Lars, Kirk and Jason to keep putting out the same music over and over again, that would be boring and potentially a bad career move. I really find it hard to listen to bands who have no ear for progression-AC/DC, Kiss, Def Leppard, just to name a few. Aside from the monotany of The Thorn Within this album is excellent in its production and form as well as it's follow-up, ReLoad. James is legendary when it comes to engineering complex riffs and has yet to loose that recognizable singing voice of his. And Kirk Hammett (for those of you who can't get the man's last name right as I've noticed while reading these awful reviews) is still one of the most AMAZING guitarists ever, next to his idol Jimi Hendrix and Joe Satriani. And the Load jokes are severly simple-minded and lame, grow up! This album is a Load of great tunes.

This album is good.Different, i'll admit, but good.I don't know why there are so many people who dislike this album just because it's different.I may be a "kid"(which i mean young teenager), but that does not mean that i don't know what i'm talking about when it comes to music.Kill'em all and RTL are different.MOP and AJFA are different. ALL OF THEIR ALBUMS ARE DIFFERENT, albeit some more different than others. In fact, i was getting tired of "killer riff, solo, killer riff".It just got boring after a while, and if they kept releasing the same stuff, i probably wouldnt be a fan of Metallica. They are my favorite band, and I'm glad they changed their sound. Also, everybody has different opinions about the genre of music they listen to, but to everyone who says "It's not heavy/fast enough, i don't like it", i'd like to remind them to keep an open mind. It doesnt have to be fast/heavy to be good, it just has to be good to be good.In my honest opinion, I would tell everybody who hasn't bought this album to buy it. Of course some tracks are better than others, but just give them a chance and try to really listen to them. Don't give up after listening to 5 seconds of "not metal enough music".Trust me they will grow on you, and they are well worth your money.

Biography

Formed: 1981 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s. Responsible for bringing the genre back to Earth, the bandmates looked and talked like they were from the street, shunning the usual rockstar games of metal musicians during the early '80s. Metallica also expanded the limits...
