Album Review
Bay Area hip-hoppers Zion I & the Grouch have stayed relatively off the national radar, even though they've been in the scene for a while now. With the upsurge in popularity of hyphy in 2006, however, as well as greater exposure thanks to a signing with Om Records, the group has been able to gain exposure in the rest of the U.S. Their first album together, Zion I & the Grouch Are Heroes in the City of Dope is partially introspection, partially consciousness, and partially hyphy-inspired dance music. Fellow West Coasters Chali 2na (formerly of Jurassic 5) and Mistah F.A.B. make guest appearances, giving credibility to both their backpacker side and their street side. The production on the record is laid-back and smooth, giving plenty of space to the MCs' rhymes while still making itself known. Unfortunately, there's nothing on Zion I & the Grouch Are Heroes in the City of Dope that really grabs you, makes you listen, aside from the occasional line or two, but it's still a pretty decent album, and nice to hear how well Zion I and the Grouch work together.
Customer Reviews
Zion I is just getting better
I didn’t give it a 5 because it aint gonna be legend, yet if 4 and 1/2 was possible it would have it. With lyricts that move you and the beats to follow, its one of my favorite rap albums. If you like catchy beats and lyrics, you’ve found your album, if you like real street rap you’ve still found it.
Zion I and The Grouch break past west coast indy hop and translate WorldWide
I have to say this album exceeds all expectations of a dope hip hop record. Bay Area's finest Zion I and Living Legends front man The Grouch come together to form Heroes in the City of Dope, 15 tracks of non-stop headnod music. Amplive (Zion I) demonstrates his abilities to bend past the traditonal underground sound with club bangers such as 'Hit Em' featuring Mistah FAB, 'Too Much' featuring Chali 2na, 'Current Affairs' and 'SMACK.' But if thats not what you are looking for, tracks like 'Make U Fly' featuring Esthero, 'Trains and Planes' and 'Digital Dirt' provide for softer textures that are perfect to be played any time of the day. 15 solid tracks will only leave you hanging for more. Take a listen you will not be dissapointed.
Hottest Release of 2006
Without any doubt in my mind, this is the most well-produced 'underground' hip hop album to date - right up there infront of The Grouch's Living Legends - "Almost Famous" , and Zion I's very own "Mind Over Matter" or "Deep Water Slang." If you can handle either of these rappers, do not hesitate to buy this album. At $9.99, it's a steal, so support these up-and-coming hip hop artists with confidence - THIS ALBUM IS DOPE!
