iTunes Review

With a name like Pink Martini, you might expect this Portland, Oregon-based outfit to play the sort of lounge popularized in the 1990s by Combustible Edison and various compilation releases. But while Hey Eugene! may occasionally nod to the genre, the large band, led by Thomas Lauderdale from behind the piano, essentially plays internationalist orchestral pop that is a model of taste and restraint. Featuring a mix of originals and covers, the album tours the world: vocalist China Forbes sings in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Arabic. Hey Eugene! travels from the Old Hollywood of “Everywhere” through various Latin rhythms, stops over in Asia and the Middle East, and then visits Manhattan’s Lower Eastside, where the scenario of the catchy title track unfolds. And the group cleverly brings together far-flung locales on “Dosvedanya Mio Bambino,” which incorporates Italian and Russian elements. The closer, a cover of the1920s Yeomans and Caesar classic, “Tea for Two,” features a duet between Forbes and the amazing Jimmy Scott that will bring a tear to your eye. What lounge act does that?

SIMPLY UNIQUE!!!

Pink Martini is more than a band or a group. These are all classicly trained musicians led by a virtuoso piano player and a throw back vocalist. The music is a lithany of expression from all cultures around the world. As most people were, I was exposed to them first in the second Hotel Costes album titled La Suite. From the moment I heard Sympathique I was hooked. Both of their previoius albums are classics and a must have for people who love the devine and unique. I haven't even heard this album yet but am purchasing it with great anticipation. If you really want a treat, look up their tour schedule and try to see them live with a local orchestra. They are amazing.

Hey Eugene!

I was listening to NPR this morning, and found China Forbes to be so incredibly charming. She said this song is about a guy who promised to call her after meeting her at a friend's party, but he never did. She also said that the chorus at the end of the song are echoes of the 1970's sitcoms, The Jeffersons and Good Times. I absolutely love this song....

Hey Eugene! - exceptional

"Hey Eugene!" is every bit as stellar as its predecessors. If you even slightly enjoyed Pink Martini's first two albums, this is a must-have. It keeps the world music atmosphere, infectious lyrics from China Forbes, and the musically diverse and talented orchestra that they're well known for, and branches off in a few new directions ("Bukra Wba'do" especially). There is less of a Latin feel to this release (we still miss "Donde Estas Yolanda?"), but with music this enjoyable, you really don't even notice. If you have the chance, see Pink Martini in concert while they are touring for this album. It is worth every penny. The live performance of "Dosvedanya Mio Bombino" at last week's release concert was nothing short of spectacular.

Biography

Formed: 1994 in Portland, OR

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The eclectic, acoustic-oriented sounds of Pink Martini have never been easy to categorize, but that hasn't prevented the Portland, OR-based band from acquiring a loyal, enthusiastic cult following. Some reviewers have considered Pink Martini to be a product of the neo-swing trend of the 1990s and have compared them to bands like the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies; however, Pink Martini have a much broader range of influences. And while most of the neo-swing...
