Album Review
John Hiatt's first live album was recorded during a 1994 winter-spring tour of the U.S. (the title is a joke) and finds the singer/songwriter backed by the Guilty Dogs, a guitar-bass-drums trio. He doesn't need any more ammunition than that, not when he's got a set of 15 songs drawn from his last four critically acclaimed albums, including "Thing Called Love" and "Tennessee Plates." Hiatt gives his songs a rougher treatment than some of those who have covered them, his throaty voice giving even love songs like "Angel Eyes" an unsentimental force. In the absence of an A&M best-of, Hiatt Comes Alive at Budokan? makes a good sampler of his work, 1987-1993.
Customer Reviews
John Hiatt at his best
This is the ultimate John Hiatt album...a perfect first one, and an essential addition to an ongoing Hiatt collection. Personally, I am more of a fan of Hiatt when he plays solo, but this album is Hiatt gone electric at its absolute best. A must have
Hiatt Comes Alive at Budokhan
I just came upon this album and I am blown away by how good it is! The guitar work on this album is fantastic. Where before I was familiar with only a little of John Hiatt's music this album opened my eyes to what a great musican he is. Definitely worth the price.
Must have
I have bought this CD three times now (I keep losing it) and it is worth it every time. John Hiatt fans know what a genius this guy is but non-listeners can get an excellent feel for JH on this disk. Actually, all the songs are great so buy the whole thing.
