Foreground, background, thinking or loving...

Sounds From The Ground is pretty much the yardstick by which all other "chillout" music should be measured. Their gift is in creating infectious hooks and melodies that sonically evolve and progress, sparing the relaxed listener from the typical chill-out redundancy that so often gets a track jettisoned from a playlist. They are a potpurri of the best influences both musically and production-wise... The most concise pitch would be Peter Gabriel/Real World meets Chicane with a splash of Crystal Method, but such summaries are overly reductive and do not emphasize the truly brilliant sonic topography and originality Nick Woolfson and Elliot Jones bring to the table. Perhaps even more impressive is their ability to be consistent while simultaneously imbuing each release with a signature sound or theme. HIGH RISING sounds to me like spirituality birthed by way of urban rhythms – whereas NATURAL SELECTION leans more towards vocal interplay, while TERRA FIRMA seems almost like a looking-glass sister release to HIGH RISING (Urban rhythms developing from spirituality). This is all subjective analysis, of course, which gets to the strength of SFTG’s work: The more attention you pay the music, the more you get out of it. It can be relaxing background music (and/or an incredibly potent bedroom mood-setter), or it can be a Rorschach look into your frame of mind and creativity. The fact that music can achieve such a state of reflection makes these guys an aptly named force to be reckoned with. It won’t be long before Hollywood comes knocking at their door. (PS - SFTG is best bought by the album – If you like one track, you’ll like them all.)

well, I AM a big fan...

So, the highly anticipated new album from SFTG is christening these virgin ears at the moment. I must admit, I am a huge fan of SFTG and all of their previous work, so I am biased in their favor. But to be honest, it is a sleeper so far. Already to track 6 (Modo) and that one is pretty refreshing, but the first few have been nothing more than sleepy electronica, nothing compared to their groovy-fresh jazz electronica that we all know and love. I buy all their stuff, want them to keep up the good work, but I wish this one got my foot tappin' a bit more.

Love it!!!

Never heard of anything by these guys before, but I made a bill laswell station on pandora.com, and these guys came up alot! Everytime something of theirs came up, I had to bookmark it! Very chill, with a great vibe! would reccomend it to anyone!
