iTunes Review

Tom Petty's records always sound like they were made by the Valedictorian of Rock ‘n' Roll 101, as if he listened to the old records and figured out how to create his own classic rock based on elemental rock ‘n' roll truths. He's never tried to do too much; like Neil Young, he's found the direct path is the most convincing. For his third solo album, Petty keeps it simple, reigning in the usual plush textures of producer Jeff Lynne for something closer to the stripped-down, folksy approach of his 1994 Wildflowers release. Father Time clearly weighs on his mind. Though the album's title gives clue that Petty hears these songs as ones for the road, the mileage is wracking up. ("If you don't run, you rust," he sings, echoing Neil Young in "Big Weekend"). It all adds up to one of Petty's most poignant albums. "Saving Grace" begins things with an excited shuffle, but the undertow is there ("And it's hard to say/ who you are these days / but you run on anyway") and is most effective on the quietest numbers ("Square One," "Damaged By Love").

Customer Reviews

It's a SOLO ALBUM.

The reason there is another version listed as only "Tom Petty - Highway Companion" is that it was released as a Tom Petty solo album, just like "Full Moon Fever" and "Wildflowers". This album was produced by Jeff Lynne, and any time Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne work together you know there's going to be magic. Best tracks include "Saving Grace", "Turn This Car Around", and "Big Weekend". For those of you who heard "Turn This Car Around" on the 2005 summer tour, the studio version is just as great and just as haunting as the live version. I'd recommend this album to anyone who has liked any of the Tom Petty/Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers back catalog.

Never a fan

I've never been a fan of Tom Petty, never could pick out any of his songs from a list- but this album has changed that. Saving Grace is the best damn song on the entire thing and has made me a fan.

tom petty AND THE HEARTBREAKERS

i dont care what the songs on the album are, tom petty has already established himself as a great songwriter in my mind. this is by no means his greatest albums, but it is still very good. However, the main version of this album is labeled as "tom petty" not "tom petty and the heartbreakers" tom petty cannot play all those songs by himself. and itunes should figure that out

Biography

Born: October 20, 1950 in Gainesville, FL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Upon the release of their first album in the late '70s, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were shoehorned into the punk/new wave movement by some observers who picked up on the tough, vibrant energy of the group's blend of Byrds riffs and Stonesy swagger. In a way, the categorization made sense. Compared to the heavy metal and art rock that dominated mid-'70s guitar rock, the Heartbreakers' bracing return to roots was nearly as unexpected as the crashing chords of the Clash. As time progressed, it...
