Brad Paisley is one of contemporary country music’s most gifted practitioners. Over the years he has built a formidable catalog and reputation. Hits Alive is not a live album of hits, but rather a two-pronged collection that includes a set of studio versions of his hits and then a set of live concert recordings from his 2010 H20 Tour. Guests such as Dolly Parton (“When I Get Where I’m Going”) and Alison Krauss (“Whiskey Lullaby”) illustrate his musical compatriots and their contributions make for satisfying duets. A track like “Ticks” shows Paisley’s silly side, but “The World” settles him into some serious honky-tonk. “Little Moments” is sentimental, while the live version of “Mud On the Tires” shows just how tight and energetic the live band can be. There isn’t a misstep here, just one great track after another. Several tunes are presented in both live and studio versions, giving us a good idea of what songs Paisley favors.

Brad Paisley is just... Amazing. He's the best male singer I have ever heard. He's the best at everything from lyrics, to harmony. UGH! I could never, EVER get enough of him. :) 5 stars.

"Hits Alive" hits the spot

This double album is a fantastic collection that covers many (certainly not all!) of Brad's biggest hits and captures the energy, the sincerity, and the flawless performances he brings to his live shows. As some other reviewers have noted, the studio hits portion of the album is taken from his existing discography and would appear to offer nothing new. But this isn't quite so: the acoustic piano version of "Then" was certainly new to me and perhaps even more powerful than the original track; and while I don't have expert ears, on first listen some of studio tracks sounded clearer, more bass-y or just a bit different, as though they have been remastered or remixed? No matter, all of his hit songs are worth hearing again (and again). My only minor complaint about "Hits Alive" is that it includes no live or studio version of "Welcome to the Future" -- my hands-down favorite BP song, and, I think, one of which Brad himself is especially and rightfully proud. Now... I can't wait to see whether he's got "Frankenstein" footage lined up for the upcoming tour...
