Aged Well

This is the first Phish record I ever owned, buying it in '95 (on cassette) when I was seventeen. All these years later it still sounds good, goofy, and full of soul. It is an ultra-eclectic mix of stuff... the album seems to get more and more weird the deeper you go, culminating with "Demand"- a song that starts as a jazzy rock jam, then a sequence of a guy driving in his car, turning on a live version of "Split Open And Melt," and then ending with a bizarre but beautiful Hebrew chant. Great album!

Hoist is not my favorite Phish album, but that's besides the point. This band is about so much more than studio albums - although I do love almost all of them. The band is about live shows, and if you want an intro to Phish, A Live One is probably the best sampling. Regarding this album, it is full of "rock hits" (what they were going for, per The Phish Biography). If you haven't heard any Phish before, I think Billy Breathes might be the best album option, but once you get into things, Hoist is a must-have. Listen to Julius, Down with Disease, Sample in a Jar, and Wolfman's Brother for the most accessible entry.

Dismal Rift? You guys are crazy. Why don't you write a full review of Rift and tell us all why it's so dismal? Hoist is Phish's big band country album. Full brass section and a number of tracks with "twang." Either way it's good.

During the early '90s, Phish emerged as heirs to the Grateful Dead's throne. Although their music was somewhat similar to the Dead's sound — an eclectic, free-form rock & roll encompassing elements of folk, jazz, country, bluegrass, and pop — the group adhered more to jazz-derived improvisation than folk tradition.
