Album Review

Tiffany's second album, a stronger, more complete package than the first, showcased a more mature image and sound without much alteration of the misunderstood-teen theme that brought her first success. Though only the ballad "All This Time" (which hit the Top Five) and the up-tempo "Radio Romance" (which barely broke the Top 40) were the only singles to gain any attention, there were many other cuts worthy of chart action. The title song, conveying an understanding of life the singer may not have been able to fully understand at the time, might have been too adult for her fan base, though its lyrics, asking for a moment with an old friend (I don't believe it hurts to grow/even when the crop you sow is a failure/You don't have to stay/I just want to hold you), are full of nostalgia and longing. "We're Both Thinking of Her," "Walk Away While You Can," and "Drop That Bomb" are perfect pop jingles. "Hearts Never Lie" is a pretty duet with Chris Farren (who went on to big '90s success in country music) that should have jump- started his career as a vocalist. Tiffany's voice is used to a much better end on this album, and it seems she's having fun singing about the perils of young adulthood, which, for music like this, is critical. If pop music isn't fun, it's nothing. The only drawbacks — and they are minor — are "It's the Lover (Not the Love)," in which she sounds like she's shouting, and the somewhat grating "I'll Be the Girl," though both are undeniably catchy.

Classy lady....

Guess I am the first to review this lost gem of an album. Tiffany has been my favorite artist for 22 years now. Her voice has grown and matured. As has her music style. But let's go back to the fall of 1988. October 1988. Tiffany had quite a year between October 1987 and the release of her second album. She experienced career highs that many do not (multiple # 1 songs around the world, the youngest person in the US EVER to record a # 1 debut album and to also have its first 2 singles hit # 1 and have her mall appearances shut down due to the enormous throngs of fans). But also experienced lows such as the often written about tales of her family discord and the tumultuous relationship with her svengali then-manager. The last single from the "Tiffany" album "Feelings of Forever" failed to crack the top 40. Effectively stopping her momentum of hit singles. Not wanting to waste time with finding superior music and producers- ol' George Tobin & MCA quickly threw together Tiffany's second album "Hold an Old Friend's Hand". While certainly not great by any means as a whole- there are slices of greatness. The first single "All This Time" remains a top favorite of mine. As does the second single "Radio Romance" & the third single (and album title). Some cuts are decent/mediocre "Oh, Jackie", "It's The Love (Not The Love)", "We're Both Thinking of Her" & "Hearts Never Lie". While "Drop That Bomb" always kind of reminds me of "Let's Hear It for the Boy" by Deniece Williams- it is flat out abysmal. Cheesy but cute & filled with warmth & light- "Hold an Old Friend's Hand" while not the stellar album Tiffany deserved as a follow up to her worldwide phenomena that was her self-titled release- still delivered some classic Tiffany moments. And hey- the album photos were shot by the legendary Herb Ritts. Take THAT Debbie Gibson. ;-)

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

In addition to scoring several big bubblegum pop hits in the late '80s, teen queen Tiffany also helped pave the way for the decade's ultimate (and most successful) teenybopper band, the New Kids on the Block. Born Tiffany Renee Darwish on October 2, 1971, in Oklahoma, Tiffany began singing at an early age, but it wasn't the light pop style that she would eventually become known for. The young singer started off performing country & western songs, eventually getting discovered by country music...
