Album Review

If Jackson Browne had convincingly lowered the bar set by his first three albums on his fourth and fifth ones, his sixth, Hold Out, found him once again seeking some measure of satisfaction, albeit in reduced circumstances. His songs were less philosophical, but they were also more personal. In "Of Missing Persons," he once again took on a eulogy as his subject, but unlike "Song to Adam" or "For a Dancer," the song was directed to his late friend's daughter and encouraged her recovery: it was more a song for the living than for the dead. Newly aware of the world around him ("Boulevard"), he was also newly sensitive to others, notably on the mutual dependency song "Call It a Loan."

This is one of the best albums in history!

"I,... I love you!" This line always makes me tear up, and takes me back to another time.
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. I became a fan for life when I heard it.

A Bit Underrated

I'm not going to lie and say that Jackson Browne's first three albums (Jackson Browne, also known as Saturate Before Using, For Everyman, and Late For the Sky), and even The Pretender are a bit more personal, and arguably his best albums than those in his more commercial years, this album still holds its own. There is no reason to be surprised at the fact that this album reached number 1 on the charts, since it is short, interesting, and full of Browne's vocal variations. The only song that is really dated is Disco Apocalypse, and some, like Boulevard, recall older songs like Walking Slow from Late for the Sky. Highlights are Hold Out, That Girl Could Sing, Hold On Hold Out, and Of Missing Persons (a song to Lowell George's daughter, George was the leader of the band Little Feat, probably one of the greatest Southern Rock bands ever, pick up Dixie Chicken, Sailin' Shoes, and Feats Don't Fail Me Now if you're a fan of the style, and George also produced several Grateful Dead albums). Overall a strong album if not an increadible and personal one, and worth it to buy.

Probably Jackon Browne's best album ever

When this album came out it was the one that I could listen to over and over and never got tired of. Even now all these years later I am still loving it.. Of Missing Persons is probably my favorite song on here , it reaches real close to the heart. You're not just listening to music when you hear this album , you are in deep thought.

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

In many ways, Jackson Browne was the quintessential sensitive Californian singer/songwriter of the early '70s. Only Joni Mitchell and James Taylor ranked alongside him in terms of influence, but neither artist tapped into the post-'60s Zeitgeist like Browne. While the majority of his classic '70s work...
