iTunes Review
Anyone acquainted with the epic grandeur of this progressive rock trio's work in the ‘70s might be surprised to hear Rush so comfortable in the pop-rock world of the ‘80s. Yet, it makes great sense that a band constantly looking to re-invent itself would find comfort in the emergent technologies of the era. Geddy Lee's voice frequently comes down from the helium-screech end of his range to embrace a warmer, human tone and it's his extra keyboard washes that layer the intricacies of the songs. Drummer Neil Peart can still be heard functioning as both the steady metronomic beat box and a percussive wunderkind consistently surprising with his inventive fills. But the real emphasis here is on songwriting. "Time Stand Still" with ‘Til Tuesday's Aimee Mann doubling up the vocals, "Open Secrets," and "Turn the Page" are among the group's most rewarding. "Force Ten" is a techno-charged hard rocker that recalls the band's fiery early edge. "Lock and Key" and "Mission" use ethereal textures underneath rock brawn.

The most played "album" in my collection
I write in many of my reviews that an album is "one of my most played albums" of all time or "very few albums I own get played more than so and so." Well, let me introduce you to the album that sits alone on the top. From 1987 until now I have listened to this album more times, and on more formats, than any album I have ever owned or listened to in history. I don't know what it is about this... the perfect mix of keyboards and guitar? Peart's perfectly rhythmic almost chant like playing? Lee's always pitch perfect vocals? Whatever it is, from the opening cheering of Force Ten to the almost serene quality of High Water, and the ups and downs in between, this is my personal vote for not favorite album of all time, but best album ever. Biased maybe (I literally grew up on this album), but I wouldn't have it any other way.
The final act of Rush's electronic quartet
In some ways, Rush's 20th century catelog of music can be separated by the live albums they produced every 5th album. The fourth album in the quartet of their studio work is usually the culmination of a tweak of their style that they chose after the live album. Take a look at what I mean; they would be "2112", "Moving Pictures", and "Hold Your Fire". Starting with "Signals" and ending here with "Hold Your Fire", Rush chose to increase the use of synthesizers and post-recording effects on their instruments. Songs became more about the overall shape of the sound, the lyrics, and the vocals. Instead of writing the instumental parts and then adding lyrics, they focused on creating more balanced overall songs. This maturity shines on "Hold Your Fire". "Time Stand Still" is a song any music listener can appreciate, even one who has trouble grasping the uniqueness of Geddy's vocals. "Second Nature", "Lock and Key" and "Mission" are all passionate songs with with well written lyrics that can stand on their own as poetry. It is a great Rush album to listen to when you can give the lyrics the attention they deserve.
Great CD!
I can't beleive the rating of this CD is 3 and a half stars! I give it 5 stars!
