Album Review

An artist who uses Autotune, cheap-sounding rhythm machines, and multi-part song formats as profligately as Brandon Bethancourt does is just begging you to hate him. So it's pleasantly frustrating, on the second Alaska in Winter album, to find it so utterly impossible to do so. Bethancourt's secret seems to be a sort doubling-down on irony — the schmaltzily descending chord progressions, the vocoderish vocal effects, the blissfully bittersweet melodies, and the lovely, straightforward harmonies are so sweetly cheesy that they come full circle and come across as completely sincere. Every song is like a variation on a familiar theme: the synthesizer arpeggios and wheezy keyboard on "Berlin," the house-inflected "Highlander, Pt. 1" (which is paired with an even prettier "Pt. 2"), and the gently chugging synth-and-banjo pop of "Knorrpromenade" all evoke the 1980s in various ways; "Speed Boat to Heaven" is more complex than it sounds at first, with strange harmonies playing off a nervous, burbling synthesizer and unsettled rhythms. At times Bethancourt's charming vagueness threatens to dissolve into self-indulgence, as on "Streetgang, Pt. 1" — which is pretty enough, heaven knows, but comprehensible lyrics would have made it even better. And the album's closing track sounds like a not-altogether-successful nod to Nick Cave. Overall, though, Holiday is loads of sweet, wide-eyed fun.

Melt into electronic bliss

I've never rated an album before, but I felt obligated to comment after I saw the measly rating of 3.5 stars. Please keep in mind few people have reviewed this album so far, so the average # of stars is quite a bit skewed. This is the type of album you can spin in the background, hum to while you're working. Play after a party night. Lie in your bed and drown yourself. Absorb the enchanting chanting. I like.

If crispy lettuce made music....

...this is what it would sound like. Refreshing, cool, new, organic. I heard "merry-go-round" on Indie Feed and found it to be infectious. I wasn't sure at 1st listen if I liked it or not but 2 days later I found myself foaming at the mouth to hear it again. The Highlanders are phenomenal!! And one thing about Knorrpromenade...who knew that a BANJO could sound sexy??? This album is different than their freshman album in the sense that there is more electro-pop-synth going on but the essence of Alaska is far from lost. I'm completely hooked.

electro and indie folk got in bed...

Years Active: '00s

An esoteric, exotic indie pop project masterminded by Brandon Bethancourt, Alaska in Winter formed in the early 2000s in Santa Fe, NM. The name has its origins in a semester Bethencourt spent in Alaska, where he started recording music in a remote cabin. He returned to New Mexico, teamed up with various indie rock types, including Beirut's Zach Condon, A Hack and a Hacksaw's Heather Trost, and violist Rosina Roybal (who had performed in the Kanye West symphony), and fleshed out his Alaskan recordings....
