iTunes Review

The Jayhawks slid into the popular consciousness at the same time the grunge scene was exploding. The classic-rock sound of the album’s opener, “Waiting for the Sun,” made more potent by the major label production of Rick Rubin protégé George Drakoulias, was a perfect counterpunch to the angst around it. The band’s earth tones — accentuated by Tom Petty’s keyboardist, Benmont Tench, and the Rolling Stones’ keys-man, Nicky Hopkins — are brought into compelling view by the harmonies of Gary Louris and Mark Olson. Their musical relationship went on hiatus after the next album, but the songs they crafted and sang together — “Crowded In the Wings,” “Two Angels” and “Settled Down Like Rain” — are the logical sons of Gram Parsons and the Eagles. The 2011 re-master features sparkling sound and five bonus tracks, including the obscure B-sides, “Keith and Quentin” and “Up Above My Head,” and two previously unreleased studio outtakes, “Warm River” and “Mother Trust You,” that all further emphasize the roots-rock end of the band.

Customer Reviews

A true classic.

I've owned this album since the mid nineties after hearing one of their songs on KVSC in St. Cloud Mn. It never gets old. I am buying the bonus tracks tonight from this album and Tomorrow the Green Grass.. Great music by one the best bands ever. Bar none.

Great Album

I'm going to trek 5 hours to see them do this entire album live. It's an album that'll grow on you and one you'll play again and again after having not listened to it in a while. At least it is for me.

Ok

Decent sound, first I thought I might enjoy, then realized they just sound like a slow version of Big and Rich. No thanks.

Led by the gifted songwriting, impeccable playing, and honeyed harmonies of vocalists/guitarists Mark Olson and Gary Louris, the Jayhawks' shimmering blend of country, folk, and bar band rock made them one of the most widely acclaimed artists to emerge from the alternative country scene. The group sprang up in 1985 out of the fertile musical community of Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Olson had been playing standup bass in a rockabilly band called Stagger Lee.
