Album Review

In 2000, Marilyn Manson not only was recovering from his fans' rejection of Mechanical Animals, he was scarred from Columbine and, worst of all, he was no longer America's demon dog. What was Brian Warner to do, standing on such uneasy ground? As a smart man and savvy marketer, he knew that it was time to consolidate his strengths, blend Omega with Antichrist Superstar, and return with a harsh, controversial, operatic epic: a vulgar concept album to seduce his core audiences of alienated teens and cultural cops. The resulting album, Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), is intended as the third part of the trilogy beginning with Antichrist Superstar, and its convoluted story line is fairly autobiographical, but the amazing thing isn't the story — it's that he figured out to meld the hooks and subtle sonic shading of Mechanical Animals with the ugly, neo-industrial metallicisms of Antichrist. Consequently, it's easy to see this as the definitive Marilyn Manson album, since it's tuneful and abrasive. Then again, much of its charm lies in Manson trying so hard, perfecting details in the concept, lyrics, themes, production, sequencing, the tarot card parodies in the liner notes, the self-theft, the self-consciously blasphemous cover art. There's so much effort, Holy Wood winds up a stronger and more consistent album than any of his other work. If there's any problem, it's that Manson's shock rock seems a little quaint in 2000. Eminem's vibrant, surrealistic white-trash fantasias were the sound of 2000, while Marilyn Manson's rock operas, religious baiting, and goth gear are from an era passed. It's to Warner's credit as, yes, an artist that Holy Wood works anyway.

Customer Reviews

This is it.

This really is Manson's best work; mixing his two top albums to create a truly differant sound that both A.S. and M.A. fans can agree on. If you don't like this album you are not a real Marilyn Manson fan.

WOW

Okay, I'm totally going against everything in my religion by listening to MM, but that's a price I'll pay. Although I do feel very bad about it. I can still be spiritual, because I look at his anti-christ stuff as simply a very heavy metaphor. This album brings back so many memories! I listened to it three times a day every day last summer, but then my parents found out and took all my MM stuff away, so I haven't heard any of it in a year. I found a website(Music Last.com) where u can listen to any song for free! When I heard this album again, SO many memories and emotions came rushing back to me! That's what I love about music; it captures our thoughts and feelings while we're listening to it, then when we hear it again, everything we were thinking and feeling comes back to us! Great album!

Wow, Amazing. Definately One of Manson's Best Albums!

I bought this album last year and still listen to it, but not enough as I should listen to it ALOT more. People hit on Manson for changing and sure, this album is a bit differant from his previous releases, but that does not mean it is a bad release. I am fairly fond of this album for there is not one song that I skip over every time I listen to this album. At first I HATED the song "Valentine's Day"...I don't know why, it just annoyed me for some weird reson, the more I listened to it, the more I realized I liked it. Same with "Cruci-Fiction in Space", I did not like that song either, but afterseeing the way Manson performed this song on the "Guns, God and the Government World Tour" DVD, I fell in love with it, he brought it to life. This album (to me) hits on many issues, from Presidants, it's a more political album, at least that's how I feel about it, it's kind of hard to explain, it hits on the feelings that we all feel and somehow don't know why we feel them, and that can be a relief. Buy this album, amazing, heavy, well written lyrics that will never leave your mind. BUY IT!

Love him or hate him, the self-proclaimed "Antichrist Superstar" — Marilyn Manson — was indisputably among the most notorious and controversial entertainers of the 1990s. Celebrated by supporters as a crusader for free speech and denounced by detractors as little more than a poor man's Alice Cooper, Manson was the latest in a long line of shock rockers, rising to the top of the charts on a platform of sex, drugs, and Satanism. Though widely dismissed by critics, his brand of metal nevertheless...
