iTunes Review

For Neil Diamond’s 2005 album, 12 Songs, producer Rick Rubin offered him the same advice and guidance he gave to Johnny Cash for his American Recordings: strip down the arrangements to the core, reject anything frivolous, trust the songs and your innate talents, and focus on presenting a complete collection of songs that put forth a consistent message and tone. This gameplan continues for the 2008 follow-up Home Before Dark. With a core backing group featuring guitarist Mike Campbell and organist Benmont Tench from Tom Petty’s Heartnreakers, the arrangements are kept naturally lean on these long, probing songs. “If I Don’t See You Again” begins things at seven minutes, experiencing the cautious emotions of a man who’s learned to not look to close at the joy he’s experiencing. Many tunes expand over six minutes, including an ear-raising duet with Dixie Chick Natalie Maines for “Another Day (That Time Forgot),” and the well-past mid-life crisis excitement of “One More Bite of the Apple.” As a producer, Rubin prefers an autumnal dimming of the day and these sepia-toned visions sometimes feel closer to Rubin than Diamond, who mutes his natural showman dynamics to best serve these introspective songs.

A Legendary Masterpiece by the Legend Himself

I am 23 years old, and have been listening to this man's music since I was three years old. As a kid, his various albums would play though the speakers of my little black cassette radio player (from Moods, various Greatest Hits, Hot August I and II, Stones, etc etc) to have pretty much his entire library. Neil is up there with the great songwriters such as Bob Dylan, and "Home Before Dark", his second collaboration with Rick Rubin since the outstanding "12 Songs" released 2005, is more than a success to show his amazing ability as both singer and songwriter. Raw with nothing but the sound of his voice with the acoustic strum of his guitar (with also piano and trumpet) is classic to his early work with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwhich in the 60's (his "Solitary Man" days) and Uni Records of his peak in the 70's ("I Am...I Said). Although this entire album is simply amazing in maturity, poise and sound, "If I Don't See You Again", "Pretty Amazing Grace", "Don't Go There" and "One More Bite of the Apple" are true Neil. His duet with Natalie Maines in "Another Day (That Time Forgot)" compliments his deep voice with the soft pick and strum and guitar with her voice (and I am not much of a Dixie Chicks fan, but this was a smart choice of duets, another success like "You Dont Bring Me Flowers" maybe?) This album is imperative for the ultimate Neil fan like myself, and for new fans alike (introduced by American Idol maybe?) It'll just remind you why you are indeed, a Neil Diamond fan.

Magnificant - no other word can describe it

Buy it, listen to the music, watch the video, read the booklet... Here is a portrait of music itself in the embodimont of a man, an artist, who has created a masterpeice. The greatness of his sound, his meaning, his heart has not been diminished by time. If you only buy one album this year, this is the one, if you only buy one song this year, make it "Pretty Amazing Grace," you won't be sorry. Great work Basher...

Neil Diamond has done it again!!!

This album is fantastic! All the songs are heartfelt and real. Listen to the words and you will be touched one way or another. My favorites are "If I don't see you again" , "Pretty Amazing Grace", "Another Day (That Time Forgot)", and "Act Like a Man". Purchase this album and you will not be diappointed.

In a career that began in the 1960s, Neil Diamond became a major recording artist, an internationally successful touring act, and a songwriter whose compositions produced hits for himself and others. His earliest recognition, in fact, came as a songwriter associated with the Brill Building era of Tin Pan Alley in the early '60s. But he soon branched out into recording and performing, and by the early '70s was topping the charts with the self-written singles "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Song Sung Blue."...
