Album Review
Al B. Sure! could be heard on the airwaves and seen on cruise ships, but as a recording artist, he was missing in action for over 15 years, until he signed with Hidden Beach and recorded Honey I'm Home with longtime collaborator Kyle West. He was never completely out of the picture, at least not throughout the majority of the '90s, as he wrote and produced for the likes of Jodeci, H-Town, Usher, and Johnny Gill, but most casual R&B followers assumed he just slid off the map. Honey I'm Home certainly does not sound rusty, like the work of someone who is desperate to reactivate his career. It could be the singer's tenth album as easily as it is his fourth, with his voice (particularly the falsetto) in fine condition, not really needing the traces of Auto-Tune flutter that occasionally bubble to the fore. It's not atypical for a Hidden Beach release either, grounded in subtle and relaxed productions, and Al B. tends to stick to mature "grown folks R&B" lyrical themes, aside from the occasional diversion into the kind of crassness best left to Pretty Ricky wannabes. ("I love playing in your box when it's late at night" is not quite the worst of the bunch.) Reverent, deeply impassioned covers of Michael Jackson's "Lady in My Life" and Sting's "Fragile" (practically a standard at this point) help balance that out.

Believe the hype
I an email blast form the label today but didn't react. I was then told by a friend that the new Al B. sure record was exceptional. I still did not quite believe it. I listened to the snippets and thought it sounded quite good. I JUST NOW LISTENED TO THE ENTIRE PROJECT JUST ONCE AND I AM BLOWN AWAY!!!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS IN AGES. EVERY SONG IS GOOD!!! GO AL!! WELCOME BACK!!! THANKS HIDDEN BEACH-QUALITY AS ALWAYS note: does any one know how to get the producer information on the tracks and other credits via itunes?? THIS CD IS AMAZING. I AM LISTENING FOR THE 2ND TIME NOW. TOP OF YOUR LUNGS IS A HIT! I LOVE IT!!!!!! I posted the above review after I heard all the songs just one time. It is now 24 hours since my download and I LOVED THIS BEFORE --- I NOW THINK THIS IS EVEN BETTER. TOP OF YOUR LUNGS is a song I have played 100 times at least so far. Maybe it is because my stbx is driving me crazy but this song was wonderful before I even knew what Al was singing about. This will surely be the soundtrack to my summer. The remakes are real nice but the new music is what is blowing my mind. What a return to the music scene. Few come back better than they left. Don't go away again!
True R&B is Back...
Al B. has brought pure R&B back and for this we should be extremely grateful with the junk on the radio today. 'Honey I'm Home' is, as Al has said, 'In Effect Mode on steroids'. It is reminiscent of IEM but in a current 'grown and sexy' way. Each track stands on its own by showcasing Al's impressive vocal range. The man can imitate Barry White for goodness sake and go as high as...Al B. Sure! I know he was bashed in the early days for his singing but his voice (which IMO has always been beautiful and uniquely suited for what he sings) has evolved in such a way there can be no doubt that this man can SANG his A** off!! He is so versatile vocally that sometimes I caught myself saying 'Is that Al?' His voice is amazing but that wouldn't mean anything without good music to accompany it. Every song is listenable but my standout favorites are 'I Love It, (Papi Aye Aye Aye)' with his couz/longtime collabo partner Kyle West which is genius. 'I'm Glad' sounds gritty and kinds of catches you off guard but it is so catchy you can't help but like it. Al does MJ justice with his rendition of 'Lady In My Life' - something that should not be taken for granted as being easy - but Al nails it. The outstanding 'Top Of Your Lungs' - the lyrics are clever and dramatic at the same time with the lighthearted music making you feel the hilarity of the situation. 'By The Way, By The Way' is wonderful and I love the way Al takes us to church at the end of 'Only You!' 'All I Wanna Do' is funky and current, 'Dedicate My All' and 'Fragile' are great...forget it, all the songs are good and others are just outstanding. Add this to your collection, if you're a real R&B fan, you won't regret it.
HOTTT!!!! Prom Night All Over Again!!
I am a TRUE Al B. fan and I have to say that the brutha is BACK with a capital B.! I became a "woman" to that 1st cd and this one makes me feel that 17 all over again!! It's differrent from any of his other cd's but still classic, smooth Al B. So good to have some REAL R&B to listen to and this one will be in heavy rotation on the ipod for awhile. Ya'll please support the brutha so that it won't be so long before he comes out with more music. Al if you're reading this, THANK YOU....SO GLAD YOU'RE HOME, HONEY!!!
