Slightly dissapointing

In 2008, I was visiting my friend Matt Talbot on a trip to Illinois, and during our catchup time he told me that one of the next bands that would be coming into the studio with him would be
Open Hand. The prospect of this was very exciting, especially since at the time both Jason Gerkin and Paul Malinowski (formerly of Shiner) had been at least on tour with the band during 2007 or so and the fact that I loved "You and Me" particularly it's more Kyuss/stoner rock inspired songs.
Shift to two years later and the album is just now coming out...and I have to say, about 60% of the album is what I was hoping for. (side-note: I don't have the liner notes in front of me, so I don't know who exactly played what on each track) That 60% I enjoy has clearly some really great contribution from the former Hum and Shiner members (Honey and Herrons are both epic, Cool is also quite rocking in it's brevity) and Justin Isham is at the top of his game on those tracks, even the more indie inspired stuff like Bre is very very good. But that last 40% is a shocking mis-step, it's almost like Justin decided after recording to tack on 5 or so more tracks and steer the band in a new direction following the formation of another lineup (not sure if that is accurate but it definitely sounds that way). Tracks like "The Valley" and "The Angels" are just simply bad, the former sounding like something Everclear would come up with and the latter recalling the worst kind of scenester dance music. There is also the string of tracks that close out the album that just drone on and on that if it weren't for Cool, you could write off that whole section of the album altogether.
All in all though, it's an album that simply needed cutting down to it's core 9-10 tracks, and it would have met my expectations just fine. More is not always better.

Totally worth the wait!!

Its been a long time comming, but it was well worth the wait!

Finally!

All I can say is: It's about damn time! Solid, Solid, Solid album from start to finish.

Years Active: '00s

Grunge, post-grunge, stoner rock, emocore, and all the Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, and Nirvana worship that comes with those scenes are big influences on the sound of Open Hand, along with a surprising touch of prog, thanks in no small part to Justin Isham's longtime love of King Crimson, early Genesis, and Robert Fripp. After they both spent time in the Los Angeles-based hardcore band I Awake, vocalist/guitarist Isham and drummer Alex Rodriguez formed Open Hand in 2000 with guitarist Sean Woods...
